The Accountant (Remastered Collector’s Edition)
(Eddie King, Ray McKinnon, Walton Goggins, et al / Blu-ray / NR / (2001) 2026 / Lightyear Entertainment - MVD Visual)

Overview: A hard-pressed farmer brings in a mysterious accountant with a knack for numbers and a love of beer. Will his skills save the family farm? 2001 Academy Award Winner for Best Short Film, this 40 minute feature stars Ray McKinnon (O Brother Where Art Thou, Deadwood, Blindside) and Walton Goggins (White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones, Justified, Fallout, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight). Produced by Walton Goggins.

Blu-ray Verdict: Personally, I loved this 35 minute, and it should be noted Academy Award-winning short film, but do not for one second think that it has anything to do with the same named movie starring Ben Affleck, as it is far from being anything of the kind.

Nor is it a feel-good comedy for what it sets out to do (and wholly accomplish in my humble opinion) is try to point out the impact of industrialization and large corporations on society as a whole, and on the independence and identity of the individual.

The point is not that the viewer thinks it is funny that it is suggested that he kills his wife and dog, the point is to what extent does a person have to go in order to maintain the lifestyle sold to us by the global corporate machine.

The music is also great. The songs that bookend the film (Jimmie Dale Gilmore with Mack the Knife at the beginning and Michael Hurley’s I Paint a Design at the end) are simply perfect. What’s even wilder than everything else is the film has that message and it is just so beautifully delivered.

In closing, color me verifiably impressed. As a Southerner, it’s comforting to find something this good and honest that deals with being, well, a Southerner. Films that try are usually filled with stereotypes with bad accents. These three men nailed it in such a way I’ve never seen before and it’s oh-so refreshing.
