[NHY] Jeanie’s Face Exploded (Blu-ray)
(Emma Cook, Jeanie Jefferies, et al / Blu-ray / NR / 2026 / SRS Cinema - MVD Visual)

Overview: From being hired to assist with makeup to becoming an iconic zombie, Jeanie’s time on the original Dawn of the Dead has become legend. Now she’s ready to tell of her time with George Romero, Tom Savini, and having her face blow off. After leading makeup on Knightriders, she vanished from the industry. Hear her story for the first time.

Blu-ray Verdict: In what is a compelling, and truly intriguing cinematic experience, Jeanie’s Face Exploded is an endearing 21-minute documentary, a definitive must-watch for Dawn of the Dead fans, exploring the life of Jeanie Jefferies; the makeup artist behind the Blonde Zombie. It offers intimate, behind-the-scenes stories of Romero’s films before she unexpectedly vanished from the industry, along with a short bonus feature on the location where the interview was filmed, home to one of the largest horror collections out there, the original Trailer, a wicked revealing Commentary track and amongst other things, a short documentary on friends looking back on 20 years of scary movie marathons.

We quickly discover that in 1977, Tom Savini discovered Jefferies and hired her to assist with makeup on George A. Romero’s “Dawn of the Dead.” While working on the film, she was cast in a small role known as the Blond Zombie, a zombie who meets her tragic end when she is famously shot in the face by Ken Foree in the cab of his truck.

Jefferies would go on to work with Romero again on the 1981 film “Knightriders,” where she led the makeup department. Shortly after that, she moved to Grand Rapids, MI, and disappeared from the film industry, unaware of the cult status “Dawn of the Dead” had achieved.
