The Closer: The Complete Series (28-Disc DVD Box)
(Kyra Sedgwick, Corey Reynolds, G.W. Bailey, J. K. Simmons, Robert Gossett, et al / 28-Disc DVD / NR / 2026 / Studio Distribution Services)

Overview: Fans can finally close the case on one of television’s most compelling crime dramas. The Closer: The Complete Series is coming to DVD, bringing all seven seasons of the award-winning show together for the first time.

Featuring every gripping episode and unforgettable performance by Kyra Sedgwick, and bonus content that takes viewers behind the scenes, this definitive collection is a must-have for fans and collectors alike.

In this critically acclaimed series, Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick), a top-notch detective who puts Los Angeles’ most brutal killers behind bars. Using her Keen instincts and brilliant interrogation techniques, Brenda can close a case by eliciting a confession or cornering a suspect through sometimes-questionable methods.

With her offbeat personality, tough-as-nails approach and track record as one of the country’s leading investigators, the no-nonsense boss of the LAPD’s elite Priority Homicide Division will keep you hooked through all seven seasons.

Revisit the groundbreaking series that won Kyra Sedgwick an Emmy Award for lead actress in a drama series and rewatch the finale that captivated nearly 10 million viewers, shattering records as the most-watched finale in basic cable history at the time — a television event fans will never forget.

Boasting an all-star ensemble including J.K. Simmons, Jon Tenney, G.W. Bailey, and Mary McDonnell, The Closer delivers powerhouse performances that bring authenticity and emotional depth to every twist and turn of its gripping storylines.

DVD Verdict: New shows come and go, crime shows are 10 a penny, so what made The Closer so good? Simple really, great casting, excellent writing. Kyra Sedgewick is superb, but what helps a lot is that her character Brenda Johnson is a breath of fresh air. Very well written, and not immediately likable, over the course of the series, I grew to like her more and more. Brenda is what made me tune in again, not the fairly standard crimes.

Another great plus is the excellent supporting cast, especially G.W. Bailey as Lt Provenza, who I hated for the first half of the first season! What a pig! However, he turned out to be a much more interesting character, and his Brenda impersonation in the one season finale was the biggest laugh of the year! Yes, some of the crimes were implausible, and some of the bad guys rather obvious, but this was the best show of each and every summer that it aired, for sure.

So what do we have on deck each episode, I hear you ask? Well, the unit is headed up by a transplanted southerner - a woman - who gets the hardest of suspects to confess. She also gets in the line of fire from time to time. Her team is made up of two older white detectives who frequently bicker for comedic effect, and several middle-aged and younger detectives who are still learning.

This show, pitch-perfect in every detail, is surely a candidate for being one of the best TV crime serials of all time!. Kyra Sedgwick is brilliant, but so is the whole cast. I especially enjoyed watching Mary McDonnell, whose big break was Dancing With Wolves, playing mental chess with Sedgwick as an occasional character. If there is a Hall Of Fame for this kind of show, I would nominate itright now!

To me the funniest line was in an episode that opened with a casket falling down a flight of stairs and popping open. Under the deceased (older male) is another body (younger female and barely dressed). Says one of the detectives, just before the opening credits, I guess you CAN take it with you! Priceless!

In short, The Closer is just a terrific, enjoyable procedural crime, cop show that is both amusing and captivating even on repeat rewatch. And this it is most highly recommended.
