Overview: In 2021, Severin Films was proud to resurrect the gory, bizarre and intense (McBastard’s Mausoleum) forgotten classic from co-writer/director Guy Magar on Blu-ray. But in 2025, their search of a Los Angeles lab vault led to the discovery of the unclaimed negative for the thought-lost Unrated Version just days prior to its destruction!

80’s splatter fans rejoice: Magar’s neon and viscera-soaked saga of possession, vengeance and carnage has never looked or sounded more harrowing. Dennis Lipscomb (EYES OF FIRE), Leslie Wing (THE FRIGHTENERS), Suzanne Snyder (WEIRD SCIENCE) and Hoyt Axton (GREMLINS) star in this relentless squishy joy that makes us angry we’ve lived this long without having seen it (Bleeding Skull), now on 2 discs with both the Unrated and Theatrical Versions scanned in 4K from their original camera negatives and over 3 hours of Special Features.

4K Blu-ray Review: Depressed painter George Miller (the brilliant Dennis Lipscomb) propels himself off a hotel roof, his suicidal act most likely prompted by either his terrible haircut or his complete lack of artistic talent (dealer’s choice). As medics bring him back from the brink of death, George is randomly possessed by the vengeful spirit of gambler Vito Minelli (Mike Muscat), who was shot and burnt alive by the men to whom he was in debt.

I what is a very reasonable supernatural potboiler, inside it a well thought out plot premise, the character of Miller might well be a dour, whiney loser but the acting by Lipscomb ensures that his character brings to the fore just the right persona for the role being undertaken.

Back on plot track, and this gangster’s ghost decides to use this loser to get revenge on the guys who killed him, which is a nice twist on the usual body inhabitant flicks I have seen before. Mind you, the scene where he has a foe put inside a pig carcass and sliced in half was well worth the price of admission also!

In short, Retribution was a long out-of-print, hard-as-hell-to-find but worthy entry into the B-movie hall of fame, and all that still holds true, save for the fact that the lovely people at Severin Films now bring forth this INCREDIBLE 2-Disc Blu-ray set! Enjoy! [C.C.]
