Every friend, foe and foil, from Little Quacker, to Spike and Tyke – and not forgetting the lady of the house, Dinah – in the stories, the situations, the hardships and courtships; from Times Square to the Hollywood Bowl; as guardsmen in the French Revolution to tall-tales out West!
DVD Verdict: Simply put, the 1940-1958 Tom & Jerry era, created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, defines the classic, Oscar-winning era of the cat (Tom) and mouse (Jerry) rivalry at MGM, focusing on their slapstick chases, inventive gags, and memorable music by Scott Bradley.
This period produced 114 theatrical shorts, establishing their enduring, often violent yet funny, love-hate dynamic, featuring recurring characters like Spike the bulldog and Tuffy the mouse, and setting the standard for animation.
And it is ALL here in the Tom & Jerry: The Golden Era Anthology (1940-1958) just released by Warner Home Video, restored, complete and uncut.
So, I hear you ask, just what was it about the duo that made them so special? Well, let us begin with the fact that there was very minimal dialogue, so the humor relied heavily on visual gags, timing, and music, making them universally accessible. Of course, there was an element of comedic sibling rivalry, where the fights often felt less like predator/prey and more like a chaotic sibling squabble, evolving to include shared moments of sorrow or cooperation.
I mean, this was (as is noted in its title) the Golden Age for these cartoons, and considered this was the peak of MGM’s animation studio, producing many Academy Award-winning shorts like this time after time after time was no mean feat.
Funnily enough, I remember watching Tom & Jerry as a kid and not realizing that the shorts I was seeing on TV were even older than my parents. I thought they were new episodes, and I guess I assumed the 40’s fashion and technology were just cartoon styling!
The cool thing about Tom & Jerry is that you could really see how the team behind it honed their craft over the years. The shorts they made in the 50’s still stand out as the best animated slapstick comedy that has ever been made IMO, and none of the attempts to bring back the IP since has gotten anywhere close. The sense of timing in particular is something you can’t really gain without the vast experience they had built.
Since their debut in 1940, the legendary cat-and-mouse duo became global icons, setting the standard for animated shorts with their blend of slapstick humor and inventive storytelling. This new anthology not only preserves the legacy of their golden era, but also enhances it, featuring several fully remastered shorts and quality improvements made to many others.
These beloved Tom and Jerry shorts look and sound better than they ever have since their original film presentations. The complete collection of Hanna Barbera’s Tom and Jerry Oscar winning masterpieces, available at last! Including three shorts, Casanova Cat, Mouse Cleaning and His Mouse Friday which are now completely remastered and uncut for the very first time.
Spanning nearly two decades of Academy Award®-winning animation, this landmark anthology showcases the wit and groundbreaking craft that made Tom and Jerry cultural icons. For collectors, families, and fans of animation history, this is a must-own set.
Oh, and one last thought: They were originally going to be named Jasper & Jinx, but they changed it after finding out that Hanna-Barbera already had a mouse character named Jinx! You’re welcome!
