Rick and Morty: Season Eight (Blu-ray)
(Chris Parnell, Harry Belden, Ian Cardoni, Sarah Chalke, Spencer Grammer, et al / Blu-ray / NR / 2025 / Studio Distribution Services)

Overview: Rick and Morty is back for Season 8! Life has meaning again! Anything is possible! Look out for adventures with Summer, Jerry, Beth, and the other Beth. Maybe Butter Bot will get a new task? Whatever happens, you can’t keep Rick and Morty down for long. People have tried!

Alongside the Blu-ray and DVD releases, the complete eighth season is currently available digitally, with episodes released shortly after their original airing. The full digital Seasons 1–8 bundle launches on July 28th, 2025, enabling fans to catch up on the entire saga.

Blu-ray Verdict: Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the smartest and most original animated shows ever made, Rick and Morty combines absurd sci-fi concepts, pitch-black humor, and emotional depth in a way few series can.

It’s a show that’s as funny as it is philosophically devastating. Exploring everything from the nature of existence to the pain of family relationships, all while delivering outrageous interdimensional adventures.

For those new to it (why, it’s season 8 already?!) Rick and Morty follows the adventures of Rick Sanchez, a cynical, alcoholic genius scientist, and his anxious but well-meaning grandson Morty Smith. Together, they travel through universes, timelines, and alien civilizations. Leaving chaos (and often trauma) in their wake.

What begins as a parody of Back to the Future evolves into an existential exploration of nihilism, free will, and the human condition. Hidden beneath layers of sharp comedy and ridiculous sci-fi satire.

Even here in this brilliantly funny, on-the-nose series, the writing is spot on perfect. Every episode balances humor, high-concept sci-fi, and surprisingly emotional storytelling. The character depth is here too though, lest we forget. I mean, Rick isn’t just a mad scientist, after all. He’s actually a broken, lonely man masking his pain behind sarcasm and genius. Oh, and Morty evolves from naive sidekick to morally conflicted survivor.

And the series has always been chock full of highly inventive concepts. From Pickle Rick to The Citadel of Ricks, to time travel paradoxes and clone dramas, the creativity never stops! And don’t get me started on the depth of the social and philosophical themes! The show questions existence, morality, and purpose. Often making you laugh and think at the same time.

Lastly we have the voice acting: Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty’s original voice), Chris Parnell (Jerry), Sarah Chalke (Beth), and Spencer Grammer (Summer) bring life and chaos to every scene, trust me on that.

Here in the newly gifted eighth season, well, you will never be able to please all the people all the time, as we well know, and so having watched it twice now with friends the consensus is that there are some very decent moments in this latest new season - that were funny to the point of sending us male adults into fits of giggles - but that there were more than a few moments where it was less funny, so to speak.

That said, overall, the good won against the bad. The show seems to bounce between having zero direction to having very heavy-handed direction in some parts. More noticeable than within the first few seasons of the show, for sure. So, and I say this with love, at times Rick and Morty isn’t the goofy, giggly sci-fi show that we all fell in love with back in 2013 for the Pilot episode. But that’s ok, as time moves on, people grow up, and the new generation might not have a grasp on their funny bones quite yet. But they will do for this show at some stage, believe me of that!

Simply put, Rick and Morty isn’t just an animated show. It’s a mirror held up to humanity’s absurdity. Beneath the crude humor and interdimensional insanity lies a tragic brilliance: a man too smart to believe in anything, and a boy who still wants to.

It’s chaotic, clever, and often heartbreaking. A modern sci-fi classic that blends Futurama, Doctor Who, and BoJack Horseman into something entirely unique.
