The Inspector Wears Skirts 4
(Cynthia Khan, Sandra Ng Kwan Yue, Kara Hui, et al / Blu-ray / NR / (1992) 2024 / 88 Films)

Overview: To save the Hong Kong Police Force’s Banshee Squad from becoming defunct, the struggling new squad members seek the help of former officers Amy (Sandra Ng Kwan Yue), now a divorced mom with a young kid, and May (Kara Hui), now partially mentally-unstable, to help them with their training regiment, lead by Madame Yang (Cynthia Khan). Their police skills are put to the test when they are ordered to nab a band of brutal thugs in the city.

Blu-ray Verdict: In what is a notable slip slide in quality from the first two features in the series, and which starred the brilliant Sibelle Hu, sure, you still have some feminine kung-fu action stars here to fit the bill - Cynthia Khan and Moon Lee - but overall, the plot line is rather wayward at times, a little incoherent at times, perhaps even overly wacky and a wee bit tedious at times, sorry.

As noted, both this and its predecessor are only sauce imitators at this time of filming, again wholly compared to the first two in the series, and also being without Stanley Fung doesn’t help it stay head above cinematic water either.

So, and with the whole story and tone being noticeably different here, and with more emphasis on action and less on the annoying comedy that soured the third movie, we still do get a movie that is highly watchable, just not one where all the wackiness and absurd, and contrived fight scenarios work all too often, that’s all.

Indeed, for me, the film is at its best when it depicts seasoned ass-kickers Cynthia Khan and Moon Lee battling a Korean super-kicker, but there’s a heck of a lot of padding between those bits. But, ok, sure, it’s quite nonsensical for the most part, but also highly funny in parts, so take it with a pinch of salt and you’ll have a great cinematic time here.
