The Long Dark Trail [Blu-ray]
(Trina Campbell, Nick Psinakis, Mick Thyer, Carter ODonnell, Brady ODonnell, et al / Blu-ray / NR / 2023 / Cleopatra - MVD Visual)

Overview: Drawing comparisons to STAND BY ME meets MIDSOMMAR, THE LONG DARK TRAIL tells the story of two impoverished teenage brothers who flee home after finally fighting back against their physically abusive father.

Hoping to find and reunite with their estranged mother, they embark on a dangerous journey to a cursed forest in Northwestern Pennsylvania, not aware that she has become a disciple of a violent and sadistic cult that dwells there.

Blu-ray Verdict: Well, me personally, I love a good horror film! I mean, the cheesier the better (and yes, Im looking at you the 80s!) and the less Hollywood-reimagined the better, so I was rather looking forward to this one from directors Kevin Ignatius and Nick Psinakis.

Starting, as most all do, innocently and, for the most part, simply more like an edgy where-is-this-going drama, complete with grey-green hued cinematography tones, as it builds, the premise gives way to the plot, which itself begins to fall into place as we watch along.

An interesting premise, for sure, but maybe one - as we get deeper in - that tilts a little too much, works too hard to execute its horror aspects, perhaps.

That said, as we watch the two brothers set off on their journey into abject darkness, literally and figuratively, and as the flashbacks of a fathers beatings start to jarringly awaken an inner demon of their own, the acting from the two siblings is taken to a whole new level of excellence.

Maybe I missed something, but - and perhaps being too picky here - the fact the brothers stayed in the woods for days, where atop the burial bluff a town was just down the mountainside, seems a little overly dramatic, but, again, maybe Im just being a little too picky here.

Overall, and as Im sure this movie will be journalistically held akin to in other reviews, The Long Dark Trail is a slow burn of some high quality cinematic expression, which does have a decent payoff come its conclusion, and is majestically sculptured around the brilliant ambience that Heart of Darkness also thematically conjured.
