Legion of Super-Heroes: 4K UHD [Blu-ray+Digital]
(Jensen Ackles, Gideon Adlon, Matt Bomer, et al / 4K UHD+Blu-ray+Digital / PG-13 / 2023 / Warner Bros. Entertainment)

Overview: Legion of Super-Heroes is an animated film directed by Jeff Wamester and stars Jensen Ackles, Matt Bomer, and Meg Donnelly.

Welcome to the 31st century and the Legion Academy, where a new generation hones their powers with hopes of joining the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Devastated by tragedy, Supergirl struggles to adjust to her new life on Earth. Taking her cousin Superman’s advice, Supergirl leaves their space-time to attend the academy.

There, she quickly makes new friends, as well as a new enemy with old ties: Brainiac 5. But a nefarious plot lurks in the shadows – the mysterious group known as the Dark Circle seeks a powerful weapon held in the academy’s vault.

Find out if the budding heroes can rise to the challenge in this all-new DC Universe Movie!

4K UHD Blu-ray Verdict: Warner Bros. Entertainment is expanding their 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray catalog offerings this month with the release of the highly-anticipated Legion of Super-Heroes in the expansive 4K Ultra HD video format this February 7th, 2023.

For my money, this Legion of Super-Heroes [4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital] combo pack sharpness takes a fairly large step forward from others in their 4K Ultra HD catalog and even comes with HDR (High Dynamic Range) for the complete 4K Ultra HD experience, of course.

So, what we have is Legion of Super-Heroes presented to us as a two-disc combo pack with a sheet for a Digital HD Copy. Other stand out points you should know are: Codec: HEVC / H.265, Resolution: Upscaled 4K (2160p), HDR: HDR10, Aspect ratio: 1.78:1 and Original aspect ratio: 1.78:1.

Featuring Dolby Vision and HDR10 for brighter, deeper, and way more lifelike colors, as with most all 4K UHDs, everything that we watch features these qualities - but somehow, this film gloriously shines within them all.

Noticeably crisp with the overall clarity receiving an obvious boost here on this release, what is more is that it is enjoyably noticeable. For as well as some new nuances to the somewhat drab palette courtesy of Dolby Vision, we also get to witness sudden bright pops of color, which makes the eyes draw in, for sure.

As for the audio, well we get the choice of: English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1.

Overall, this is a very strong 4K HDR Blu-ray presentation, and, for the most part, the audio track remains fairly similar to its DTS-HD counterpart; with much of the action occupying the surrounds with outstanding directionality and placement where effects flawlessly pan between the sides and rears.

For those instantly inquiring minds, Legion of Super-Heroes is set in the 31st century, over a thousand years after the present of the Tomorrowverse. By this time a new Justice League exists in the form of the Legion of Super-Heroes while various alien species seemingly live on Earth.

In truth, those who grew up with stories of these heroes in comics or graphic novels most likely won’t like all the tampering done with the story line here, such as making Mon-El the bad guy.

Then again, if you are of a mind that can envision time travel, alternate universes, multiple worlds (thereby making multiple plots and story lines plausible) then this may well be a story you will enjoy!

However, and covering all bases here, if you are of the mindset where there should only be one universe, with one set of stories and time marches forward only, then this definitely isn’t for you, my friend!

Oh, and all those who grew up in an era where men had all the power won’t particularly care for this, as it shows a whole host of highly empowered women!

Moving on and it should be noted immediately that this new animation style is simply beautiful. Personally, I love it, others sitting with me watching it were not so impressed, but each to their own.

I also really enjoyed the Super Sons CGI animation they had, but then again, I shouldn’t be so surprised, given that DC is always top of the tree when it comes to their incredible animation department.

The voice acting is pretty top notch all around also, such as in an opening scene, where Kara and her mother Alura witness the beginning of the end of Krypton. Alura voiced by popular voiceover actress Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect franchise) is brilliant here, so very on point with her inflections that you just believe the character is doing the talking (if that makes sense!).

Unafraid to striking the classic pose, Supergirl is voiced by Meg Donnelly, best known for her role as Taylor Otto on the American Housewife and as Mary Campbell in The Winchesters. Donnelly is also on top for here, locked into her characters’ on screen quirks, and the monstrous Solomon Grundy - who is seemingly always armed with high-tech artillery, especially as he wreaks havoc on Metropolis; until Supergirl arrives on the scene, is voiced by Darin De Paul (Mortal Kombat Legends franchise), and is at the top of his evil-voiced game here, trust me!

As we know, Kara/Supergirl’s primary comfort on Earth is her cousin, Superman, shown to perhaps its fullest via a touching rooftop scene as we progress (see clip below). Superman is voiced by Darren Criss (Glee, The Assassination of Gianni Versace), and he reprises his role rather expertly, one has to admit, for he doesn’t strain to be a bigger version of himself; which I have heard a few others try to do.

We also get some interesting and cool side characters as well, like Brainiac 5 voiced by Harry Shum Jr. Matt Bomer as The Flash, Mon El, Timberwolf, Triplicate Girl, Ely Henry as Bouncing Boy, and Dawn Star (which if they ever do a live action version, they should cast Cynthia Hamidi, the voice actor, as in real life even she is a perfect match to her!)

In closing, the action sequences are really well put together, inclusive of some pretty hearty, solid fights and we get some rather excellent sound design within the Supergirl fight scenes; such as the booms you hear are a nice touch when she punches!

4K UHD Special Features:
The Legion Behind The Legion: A five-minute piece in which the creative team discusses the process of developing this story, what they wanted to accomplish with this telling, some of the vocal performances and more.

Down To Earth – The Story Of Supergirl: A near nine-minute featurette which takes a closer look at the character of Supergirl, the history she has in the comics, how she differs from Superman, what they wanted to do with her arc in this story and more.

Meet The Legionnaires: A near ten-minute look at the supporting characters that make up the titular Legion and the special characteristics that make them so interesting, especially when banding together.

Brainiac Attack – The Intellect Behind The Super-Villain: An eight-minute look at the lineage of the Brainiac family and how their history hinders trust when Brainiac 5 attempts to do good in the world. There is some decent history thrown in here worthy of exploration.

From the DC Vault: Two high definition episodes from the classic Superman: The Animated Series are featured here, “Little Girl Lost, Parts I and II,” featuring Supergirl.

Previews: There are in-depth previews of the previously released Justice League vs. The Fatal Five and Superman: Man Of Tomorrow. If you are a huge DC fan, you likely already own them, but give them a watch if you missed out on these.
