Catwoman: Hunted [4K Ultra HD]
(Stephanie Beatriz, Lauren Cohan, Kelly Hu, Jonathan Banks, Elizabeth Gillies, et al / 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray+Digital / NR / 2022 / Warner Bros.)

Overview: In the all-new original Catwoman: Hunted, Catwoman’s attempt to steal a priceless jewel puts her squarely in the crosshairs of both a powerful consortium of villains and the ever-resourceful Interpol, not to mention Batwoman.

It might just be enough to contain her. Or not!

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Verdict: Warner Bros. is expanding their 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray catalog offerings this month with the release of the brilliantly created DC Animated Movie Catwoman: Hunted in the expansive 4K Ultra HD video format this February 8th, 2022.

For my money, this Catwoman: Hunted [4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital] combo pack sharpness takes a fairly large step forward from others in their 4K Ultra HD catalog and even comes with HDR (High Dynamic Range) for the complete 4K Ultra HD experience, of course.

So, what we have is Catwoman: Hunted presented to us as a two-disc combo pack with a sheet for a Digital HD Copy. Other stand out points you should know are: Codec: HEVC / H.265, Resolution: Upscaled 4K (2160p), Aspect ratio: 1.78:1 and Original aspect ratio: 1.78:1.

Featuring Dolby Vision and HDR10 for brighter, deeper, and way more lifelike colors, as with most all 4K UHDs, everything that we watch features these qualities - but somehow, this film gloriously shines within them all.

Noticeably crisp with the overall clarity receiving an obvious boost here on this release, what is more is that it is enjoyably noticeable.

For as well as some new nuances to the somewhat drab palette courtesy of Dolby Vision we also get to witness sudden bright pops of color; such as most all the moments that take place in the mansion, where a very colorful fancy dress ball is underway, but yet our dressed-as-Catwoman hero is still caught out!

As for the audio, well we have just the singular choice here: English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz, 24-bit).

Overall, this is a very strong 4K HDR Blu-ray presentation, and, for the most part, the audio track remains fairly similar to its DTS-HD counterpart; with much of the action occupying the surrounds with outstanding directionality and placement where effects flawlessly pan between the sides and rears.

As for the movie itself, well, directed by Shinsuke Terasawa (Gintama, Yo-kai Watch) from a script penned by Greg Weisman (Young Justice, Gargoyles), and produced by Ethan Spaulding (Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms) with the Executive Producer being Sam Register (phew), I found Catwoman: Hunted to be a lot of fun, very colorful, well scripted and, most of all, a deliciously animated watch throughout

With a deep character focus on females - for not only is Catwoman (Elizabeth Gillies) taking central titular stage, but we also get Kate Kane (aka Batwoman, Brooklyn Nine Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz, League of Shadows assassin Cheshire (Kelly Hu), Barbara Minerva, leader of Leviathan (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) and the always-lovely to hear (and see) Lauren Cohan as Julia Pennyworth – this allows the show to be a lot less testosterone’d-out!

Oh trust me, there are more ladies involved, and, of course, male characters to, although no Batman this time round, but with that seed now sown, let’s move on into the feature and with writer Greg Weisman having explicitly stated that his script was inspired by 1979’s The Castle of Cagliostro, which was also one of many animated films to feature the legendary thief Lupin III, it seems that this noted influence allows this venture to, in some ways, come full circle for certain characters.

Sprinkle in a heavy dose of the supernatural we also get to witness a very different version of Cheetah, especially if you’re only familiar with the version in Wonder Woman 1984! (All I will say on this, as you yourselves should witness her first hand, is that this version of Minerva’s alter-ego is a lot more beast-centric!)

Overall, the facial animation is top notch, any and all transformative moments are done expertly, the dialogue is, for the most part, never unintentionally cheesy, and the colorful, anime-like stylings of the film and its foreground / background animation bleeds seamlessly and is highly effective.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, DC and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, the feature-length, anime-style Catwoman: Hunted arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray and Digital on February 8th, 2022.
