'Garfield Cartoon World: Two Movie Collection'
(DVD / G / 2020 / PBS Kids)

Overview: It's time to jump into Cartoon World with Garfield and pals for a special double feature!

DVD Verdict: Just to bring you up to date a wee bit, Garfield is a fictional cat and the protagonist of the comic strip Garfield, created by Jim Davis.

The comic strip centers on Garfield, portrayed as a lazy, fat, and cynical orange cat. He is noted for his love of lasagna, coffee and sleeping, and his hatred of Mondays, fellow cat Nermal (sometimes), raisins and exercise.

In 'Garfield Gets Real' (2007), Garfield grows bored with his life as a comic strip star and thinks things are greener on the other side of reality. He escapes the real world and leaves his friends and family behind, but soon realizes that real cats don't enjoy the perks of the entertainment biz!

OK, well, just so we're all on the same page here, in this movie Garfield, Odie, John Arbuckle and the rest of the cast live in the "cartoon" world.

The idea behind this is that the characters acknowledge their own little fourth wall. They get up, go to work and "film" comic strips with their director and scripts like an actual movie, magically send the finished strips into the newspapers of the "real world" and then watch people's reactions through a magical window viewer that lets them see out of the newspaper!

The voice acting is great, the characters are in character (Nermal is a nuisance and the first to try to benefit from Garfield's departure), but probably the most notable thing is the animation, which is excellent.

There are several points where the level of skill is demonstrated, such as the introduction. In some cases I feel like they might be doing a little too much for something based around Garfield - I mean, Garfield doesn't exactly require Pixar animation - but overall, this was a quite darling movie!

Then, in 'Garfield's Fun Fest' (2008), it's time for the annual talent competition that determines the funniest comic strip in Cartoon World! There's a new kid in town this year named Ramone, and he's a tall and handsome threat! Will Garfield be able to win this year? For our family, 'Fun Fest' was surprisingly good, albeit using the laid out plot structure of the first movie ie: a moral-laden Garfield has to learn by the end of the film, one way or another.

Here, Garfield cares more about being funny and neglects his girlfriend, but at the same time he feels like he's lost his comedic powers and so goes on a road trip with Odie to a legendary place up in the clouds.

There he gets this magical water from an old master to get powerful comedic powers - kinda like Goku from Dragonball! - but it even goes as far to explain the psychology of successful and failing comedians; which may be a we bit heavy-handed for the small ones in your family watching along.

The story finally ends with the highly engaging, well staged point of view shot, inclusive of a wonderous Tango scene, which means I found this movie really pretty good and very satisfying. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
