'Dexter: The Fifth Season'
(Michael C. Hall, et al / 4-Disc DVD / R / 2011 / Showtime)

Overview: In the aftermath of last season's chilling finale, Rita's death has left Dexter feeling responsible, possibly even... guilty. Unable to deal with the trauma, Dexter makes a drastic decision that will impact everyone around him.

DVD Verdict: WARNING: SPOILER ALERTS COMING! ... After the most horrid of findings for someone to come home to, Dexter decides in the very first episode, 'My Bad' to not face the press and make a boating dash away from everything. Stopping for gas along the way, his run in with an annoying redneck soon makes him realize that running away is not the answer after all. Battling with the anger of both Astor (Christina Robinson) and Cody (Preston Bailey), Dexter also contends with Rita's funeral. In 'Hello, Bandit,' he and the kids try to make it work as a family, whilst he stumbles across a possible serial killer. Playing to his hunch, it takes him away from the kids who end up leaving to go stay with their grandparents.

In 'Practically Perfect,' Dexter hires a nanny for Harrison and carries on his hunt for his just-discovered serial killer. But, at the same time it seems Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) and the Miami PD are investigating something that might also be linked to Dexter's man! After his kill, Dexter comes across a young girl, #13 (Lumen Pierce - Julia Stiles), a kidnap victim that was never killed; but locked in the basement. Dexter saves her, much against her will. In 'Beauty and the Beast,' Dexter keeps begging Lumen to trust him, but she fights him all the way - for the most part. Deb keeps spouting out potty mouth comebacks to everyone, but two of the best come out in this episode: "Sh*t on my face" and "F**k me in both ears"!!

In 'First Blood,' Lumen now trusts Dexter, knows what he is, and knowing there is a gang of rapists out there that did this to her, wants his help to kill them, one by one. Dexter finds out that the one he just killed was one of five friends in that group and is hesitant to get involved. Angel Batista's (David Zayas) new wife, Lieutenant María LaGuerta (Lauren Vélez) is involved in a sting to trap a bad cop (Peter Weller, 'RoboCop'). On Dexter's wishes, Lumen leaves Miami - and then comes straight back! In 'Everything Is Illuminated,' Dexter moves back into his/Deb's apartment from the old house, suspended cop Stan Liddy (Weller) is hired by Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington) to find out more on what Dexter is up to. Lumen, under Dexter’s tuition, makes her first kill of the gang.

In 'Circle Us,' another left of center turn of events brings more dead women to light, and now Dexter has to race against the Miami PD to be the first to catch/kill the remaining members of the rape gang. Deb also gets to use another colorful turn of phrase. When given new info she retorts, "Sh*t a brick and f**k me with it"! A new character comes to light here in Jordan Chase (Jonny Lee Miller), a highly intelligent, a well known and highly regarded author, and a motivational speaker, who just might be the ringleader of this gang!

In 'Take It!,' after a Miami PD raid goes wrong, Lieutenant LaGuerta lays the blame at Deb Morgan's desk. Suspended and bounced to records she uncovers more info on the serial killers and is quickly back on the team. Dexter and Lumen catch up with another member of the rape gang. In 'Teenage Wasteland,' Dexter gets close to Chase, but when he thinks a wayward, acting-out Astor has been kidnapped he calls in the police. It turns out to be a false alarm, but then Deb gets to meet Lumen (his 'tenant') for the first time. A quiet episode it still packs a powerful ending!

In 'In the Beginning,' Chase now knows Dexter suspects him, that Lumen is alive and is starts to bait them both. Another slow building episode, Dexter and Lumen find the last (aside from Chase) of the rape gang. Lumen kills him, and suddenly she and Dexter 'find' each other! In 'Hop a Freighter,' Dexter finds the recording bug in his apartment, put there by Liddy, tracks him down (after being kidnapped by Liddy!), and then kills him in his truck! In the final episode, 'The Big One,' with Liddy dead, and his love for Deb announced, Quinn decides to let the Dexter thing drop. In the meantime, Dexter does Quinn a favor too. And, without giving away the final, final ending, pay close attention to the final kill - as it happens VERY suddenly!
