'Shortcut to Happiness: Special Edition'
(Alec Baldwin, Dan Aykroyd, Anthony Hopkins, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kim Cattrall, et al / Blu-ray / PG-13 / (2003) 2019 / MVD Marquee Collection)

Overview: Down-and-out writer Jabez Stone (Producer and Director Alec Baldwin) sells his soul to The Devil (Jennifer Love Hewitt) in exchange for fame and fortune.

Blu-ray Verdict: This wonderful, truly delightful film was shot in 2002 but it was three years later that I saw at first at the Naples Film Festival - and it was a terrific film back then too!

Anthony Hopkins was great, as always, as the lawyer who is hired to save Baldwin from eternal damnation and va-va voom Jennifer Love Hewitt as the fire-emblazoned red-headed Devil was simply sensational.

So too Kim Cattrall as a knock-out, drop dead gorgeous PR manager and then rounding it all out perfectly is the cheesy, overacting, and yet perfectly-placed within this movie Dan Akroyd (here actually, more or less, showing off his dramatic chops).

Sadly though, of all the actors in the film, the one I had to rank the lowest was Baldwin himself! He really had no business acting or directing this film. His performance left a lot to be desired and his directing even more so.

I found out later that he walked off the set after he turned in his Director's cut and they hired a new editor who literally saved this film from dying a slow, unpublished death.

I also read in the trades where Producers Michael Gordon and David Glasser were the ones who kept trying to keep this film from sitting on a shelf for the next twenty years and finally got Bob Yari to acquire the film from the insurance company!

Regardless, please, please make a point to see this film when it comes out on Blu-ray via the wonderful folks there at MVD Visual as I think it was well worth the wait. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of the Original Theatrical Trailer.

'Shortcut to Happiness: Special Edition' Blu-ray will be released on July 16th, 2019 via MVD Marquee Collection.
