'Doc Martin: Series 4'
(Martin Clunes, Caroline Catz, Ian McNeice, Stephanie Cole, et al / 2-Disc DVD / NR / 2010 / Acorn Media)

Overview: After his wedding day disaster, Dr. Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes, Men Behaving Badly) is even grumpier and ruder than before. His former fiancée, Louisa (Caroline Catz, Murder in Suburbia), has left the village to avoid embarrassment. The doctor himself plans to return to London as a surgeon--if he can conquer his fear of blood. But it’s hard to leave a place as charming and full of eccentric characters as Portwenn.

DVD Verdict: Series 4 picks up a few months down the road after the dramatic falling apart of the Doc's wedding ceremony from the ending of Series 3. As usual, our Cornish hero is unfazed by it all (outwardly) and sets about his days as usual. Although, inwardly, he is changing, evolving, and wants to spread his wings and escape the small-minded, eccentric characters of Portwenn - for London, perhaps?

In 'BETTER THE DEVIL,' Louisa has been gone from Portwenn for a few months, the Doc is dealing with a woman dog whisperer ("Most of my best friends are dogs ... that doesn't surprise me!"), a hard of hearing oaf of a man, and whilst with a patient at Truro Hospital, he runs into his ex-fiancée of many years back, Edith. Oh, and come the final knock on the door, Louisa comes back into his life - heavily pregnant!

In 'UNEASY LIES THE HEAD,' with Louisa's return causing townsfolk to wag their tongues, she tries to get her old job back at the school - but a new headmaster is there, and is also renting her old house! Edith becomes Louisa's doctor at Truro Hospital instead of the Doc. But, in a twist of good fate for Louisa, it seems the headmaster is suffering from an eccentric medical illness, which comes to the fore on the beach!

In 'PERISH TOGETHER AS FOOLS,' the local policeman's brother is back to stay, and ill too. The surgery gets an order makeover, which the Doc hates, and comes the end, the Doc saves the day when figuring out why the Policeman's brother is so ill.

In 'DRIVING MR McLYNN,' and elderly couple seem to be trying, for some strange reason to pull the wool over the Doc's eyes. But he's having none of it. Louisa still wants to be school head again, the Doc opposes it (due to her pregnant and full-time work shouldn't be undertaken), and Auntie Joan reveals she is skint! Finally, as we've all been watching along with, the Doc tells Edith he applied for a surgery position at Imperial Hospital in London as Chief of Vascular - he just has to overcome his phobia to blood!

In 'THE DEPARTED,' the Doc travels up to the City of Westminster and to the Imperial Hospital, to check out his (could be) new operating theatre - and to meet with a Chief Surgeon about the position and its undertakings. He lies to him about his fear of blood issues. On the train back, one of his annoying patients dies on his arm! Then, his newly widowed wife keeps coming in complaining of body issues and talking to her just-lost husband! Auntie Joan also gets sued!

In 'MIDWIFE CRISIS,' a new midwife comes to town to take on the pregnant ladies, including Louisa, who she tries to steer away from the Doc ... and all men! Joan is told of the Doc's new London job and, by chance, Louise overhears it too. Bert's restaurant has a new cook, but as she is ailing, should they eat the food she brings in? And, with all these issues, the Doc misses his important Imperial Hospital meeting.

In 'DO NOT DISTURB,' the Doc finally reveals, to all, his leaving plans. It seems his phobia to blood is either gone or well under control, and so he is off to London, ASAP. His therapist, employed to get him over this phobia has sent him CDs to listen to, which he continues to right up until the end. In a kind of a useless subplot, the Doc accompanies Edith to a conference where she is key note speaker, and where they will share a bed for the night, but after a bloody kitchen mishap, it ends differently than either expected. Joan, to make money, starts taking in B&B guests (paying customers at 30 GBP a night, breakfast extra), but her first guest (Ted Nugent, and NO, not the Ted Nugent!) turns out to have his own medical issues!

In the season finale, 'THE WRONG GOODBYE,' the surgery has a packed last day of patients, not to mention everywhere he goes the day includes abundant greetings and expressions of affection. Edith wants an apology, which she never gets, Auntie Joan's on his back over his unborn baby and him running away, and after solving one last medical case in Portwynn, the Doc quickly realizes it involves Louisa - and that she, and the baby are in immediate harm.

As for the season finale ending, well, I'm not gonna give that away for love nor money. Suffice to say though that all's well that ends well for the Doc, Louisa, and the beautiful quaint fishing port of Portwynn.
