'Don McKay'
(Thomas Haden Church, Elizabeth Shue, et al / DVD / R / 2010 / Anchor Bay Entertainment)
Overview: Thomas Haden Church is Don McKay: a janitor haunted by the memories of a terrible mistake he made when he was a teenager. Suddenly, after 25 years of self-imposed exile, he hears from Sonny (Elizabeth Shue), his ex-girlfriend and still the love of his life. She is dying and wants to spend her final days with him. Although it means returning to the site of the tragedy, Don rushes to her side.
DVD Verdict: Thomas Haden Church stars as the eponymous Don McKay. Don is a single, lonely janitor who sends letters each year to his high-school sweetheart, Sonny, whom he left behind. And then, completely out of the blue, and some 25 years on, Sonny (Elisabeth Shue) writes back! She tells him she’s dying and wants to spend her last days with him.
Hmmmm, ok, doesn't sound like a trap ... does it?! Anyhoo, Don IMMEDIATELY goes back to his hometown to see Sonny - who is single and now being cared for by creepy live-in nurse Marie (Melissa Leo).
The clues to who both Don and Sonny truly are, or were, are scattered throughout, giving you a little mind game jigsaw of pieces to put togetehr for 90 minutes. But, and as much as the film doesn't exactly fly off the screen, it’s frustratingly unclear what is going on sometimes, who is telling the truth, and why no one is asking certain questions begging to be asked!
Finally, the tangled plot quickly unravels at the end with an unexpected surprise ending. And all the questions running around throughout the film get an answer - THANKFULLY! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
