'Cocaine Godmother: The Griselda Blanco Story'
(Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jenny Pellicer, Alejandro Edda, Warren Christie, Juan Pablo Espinosa, et al / DVD / TV-14 / 2018 / Lionsgate Films)

Overview: Academy Award® and Tony Award® winner Catherine Zeta-Jones stars in 'Cocaine Godmother: The Griselda Blanco Story', a film based on the life of drug lord Griselda Blanco, a pioneer in the Miami-based cocaine trade.

DVD Verdict: For those not in the know about the real Griselda Blanco (February 15, 1943 – September 3, 2012), allow me to quickly bring you up to date.

Blanco, known as La Madrina, the Black Widow, the Cocaine Godmother and the Queen of Narco-Trafficking, was a Colombian drug lord of the Medellín Cartel and a pioneer in the Miami-based cocaine drug trade and underworld during the 1970s, all the way to the early 2000s.

It has been estimated that she was responsible for up to 200 murders while transporting cocaine from Colombia to New York, Miami and Southern California.

On February 20, 1985, she was arrested by DEA agents in her home and held without bail. After her trial, Blanco was sentenced to more than a decade in jail. While in prison, she continued to effectively run her cocaine business.

On the night of September 3rd, 2012, Blanco died after having been shot twice in the head by a motorcyclist in Medellín, Colombia. She was shot at Cardiso butcher shop on the corner of 29th Street, after having bought $150 worth of meat. She was 69.

In truth, it's a true marvel that the creators of this Lifetime Television Movie managed to pack so much into it, because there is enough material for a complete, and long-running mini-series, that's for sure. I know they've obviously condensed a lot of the exploits down, but still, this is chock full of Blanco's history nonetheless.

As for the overall production quality and style, it's definitely on a par with one of my other favorite shows of this same ilk, 'Narcos'. One good thing about 'Narcos' is the narration of the DEA agent that helps make things clear along the way and as much as it isn't like that throughout here, there are similar moments to be found.

The story of Griselda Blanco grips us from the very beginning and her terrible childhood followed by her start in the drug business, and her eventual rise on up through it. In fact, the fantastic things that happen along the way are really so hard to believe it could only be a true story!

Catherine Zeta Jones gives it her all in this performance as the Latino, although quite why she was chosen, as a Welsh lady, to take the role in the first place is beyond me! Anyhoo, her Latino accent and posture is spot on as she masters the drug fueled rages and bisexual passions told to be that of Blanco perfectly.

The supporting cast all do their own thing rather well too, but never overshadow Jones' lead role. In fact, 'Narcos' fans may spot a major character from the show here in a very different role, so keep your eyes peeled.

Personally, I could have watched a 10 episode mini-series of this show, not just a quick in-and-out movie, but I guess they didn't have the time nor money for such a thing there at Lifetime Television.

In closing, I don't why they haven't made more movies about Griselda Blanco, given that she was one of the leading people responsible for the drug war in the '70s-'80s, but here in 'Cocaine Godmother: The Griselda Blanco Story,' Jones brings her tale lovingly, and expertly to life. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with both Spanish and English Subtitles.
