'Spying On The Royals'
(DVD / NR / 2018 / PBS)

Overview: Declassified documents bring to light the secret story of the stunning events of 1936, detailing the most controversial espionage operation in British history, targeting King Edward VIII and his feisty American lover Wallis Simpson, both considered major security threats.

DVD Verdict: "Secret files" (I'll put it like that as, well, who knows where these once-buried-to-the-public "secret files" actually came from, sorry) shed new light on the scandalous romance of Edward VIII & Wallis Simpson.

On the weekend of December 5th, 1936, a frazzled King Edward VIII sat alone at Buckingham Palace. In secret, he telephoned his brother Bertie to tell him of his major decision - that he could no longer be King if it meant abandoning the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson.

Oh, and just to point this juicy fact out to those unknowing of the fact, it was 1936 and the couple's affair caused a huge scandal in Britain; because Simpson was a twice-divorced socialite.

But little did the royal brothers know that others were covertly listening to their private phone calls. In fact, Edward and Wallis were bugged, wire-tapped, and followed on the specific orders of both the British king and the American president!

This top-secret surveillance operation involved hundreds of spies over eleven years, spanning two continents, eight countries, and the Atlantic Ocean.

The documentary draws on cabinet documents released in 2013 and the research by Cormac and Professor Richard Aldrich of the University of Warwick.

We actually learn that the phone tapping at Buckingham Palace was carried out by a rising star who was later involved in intelligence around the Allied invasion on D-Day in 1944 that thwarted the Germans.

This two-part PBS documentary goes a long way to "reveal" (sorry, but had to) the greatest royal scandal of the twentieth century through an entirely new perspective. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
