'Push: 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital'
(Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, Camilla Belle, Cliff Curtis, Djimon Hounsou, et al / 4K Ultra HD + Blu ray + Digital / PG-13 / 2018 / Lionsgate - Summit Entertainment)

Overview: Available for the first time on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack comes the story of a secret government agency seeking out people with special powers, so it can harness their abilities for its own shady purposes.

4K Ultra HD Verdict: Lionsgate continues to expand their 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray catalog offerings this April with the release of this quite stunning 'Push' (2009) in the new 4K home video format on April 10th, 2018.

For my money, this 'Push: 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital' combo pack's sharpness takes a fairly large step forward from others in their 4K Ultra HD catalog, but still doesn't feature all the bells and whistles that those do when released by, say, Warner Brothers or Universal Home Studios.

Nonetheless, 'Push' is presented to us as a two-disc combo pack with a sheet for a Digital HD Copy [which can be redeemed via redeemmovie.com or through VUDU], but is only available in HD SDR and HDX. The dual-layered UHD66 disc sits comfortably opposite a Region A locked, BD50 disc inside a black, eco-vortex case with a glossy slipcover.

As with most all 4K UHD's, everything that we watch features a much brighter, deeper, more lifelike set of colors. Noticeably crisper with the overall clarity receiving an obvious boost here on this release, what's more is that it's enjoyably noticeable.

The picture enjoys the fruits of the added resolution in terms of bringing out extremely fine facial and clothing textures within the action scenes, which in comparison leaves the 4K UHD Blu-ray presentation looking almost smooth and flat.

Indeed, it truly is masterful what they have done to this movie as it is now presented in a vivid (man is it vivid!) HVEC H.265 encode, with a Dolby Vision HDR, all presented within a wondrous 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

Overall, this is a strong 4K UHD Blu-ray presentation, and, for the most part, the audio track remains fairly similar to its DTS-HD counterpart; with much of the action occupying the surrounds with outstanding directionality and placement where effects flawlessly pan between the sides and rears.

Phew! OK, so, as for the movie itself, well, starring Chris Evans ('Captain America'), Dakota Fanning ('War of the Worlds'), and Camilla Belle ('When a Stranger Calls'), 'Push' follows two young Americans with special abilities who race to find a girl in Hong Kong before a shadowy government organization called Division does.

Starting in the 1940s, certain lucky individuals were chosen for experimentation in order to create or enhance their psychic abilities. Now, decades later, a variety of second-generation psychics are all after the same thing - a case containing a secret - and hope to find it before The Division does.

This film will likely be seen as comparable to other superhero movies, such as 'X-Men' or 'Watchmen'. And, in all fairness, it would be hard to critique it without mentioning recent films of the genre.

Indeed, personally, I saw a stronger parallel between this one and the highly underrated 'Night Watch', as their are not only good and evil factions, but a limited amount of powers the super humans can have. Although I liked 'Night Watch' better, this film was enjoyable and never lost my interest.

The overall strength of 'Push' comes in its character development. Some of my friends that watched it here with me tonight thought that the film was too flashy, and the plot convoluted. I would tend to agree, well, at least sympathize with this; for there was a bit too much action at times, and the story was more dense than two hours could properly cover.

This is a film that needs to be three hours or a trilogy. But, as I said, character development was strong. Where we didn't always understand what "The Division" does, we were at least able to understand the protagonists well enough to care about them.

Dakota Fanning delivers a breakthrough performance here. I've spent years making jokes at her expense, calling her the white girl who gets called up to play the precocious child in the latest big budget film! But Fanning is escaping the "child actor" phase, and really comes into her own in 'Push'.

She plays a Watcher (one who sees the future) that deals with very adult problems - looming death, alcoholism and growing up alone. However, Chris Evans is just too cheesy throughout, always trying to overdo the whole "007" act, but he gets the job done - kinda sorta.

In closing, and despite the film's few flaws - the flashiness and convoluted story, including an ending some may find unsatisfying - I really did enjoy this one and would recommend it to those who like superhero movies; or just good, well-written action. This is a Widescreen Presentation (2.35:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs via 1080p and comes with the Special Features of:

* Cassie Buys Alcohol
* Stowe and Popgirl on the Phone

Breaking Down the 9 Types of Psychics Featurette (4K only)
