'9 Lives Movie Collection' (Blu-ray)
(Arnold Schwarzenegger, F. Murray Abraham, Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, Chuck Norris, Ron Silver, et al / Blu-ray / NR / 2018 / Mill Creek Entertainment)

Overview: They Take A Lickin' But Keep On Tickin ! Nine action-packed features in adrenaline pumping high definition. 'Last Action Hero', 'Maximum Risk', 'Into the Sun', 'S.W.A.T.', 'Stealth', 'Vertical Limit', 'Blind Fury', 'Silent Rage' and 'White Line Fever'.

Blu-ray Verdict: I won't detail them all, but up first is my all-time favourite of the bunch, 'Last Action Hero' (1993) – PG-13 - Arnold Schwarzenegger, F. Murray Abraham, Austin O’Brien. The plot concerns this kid Daniel Madigan. He leads a pretty poor life and the only good thing that happens in it is that he gets to go to the movies to watch his favourite movie(s), Jack Slater with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He finds a golden ticket and travels into one such movie: Jack Slater IV. Madigan marvels at his good fortune and observes the many action movie clichés: a police officer getting blown up two days from retirement, Jack Slater evading every blast and machine-gun burst that comes his way, the bad guys never winning, the attractive daughter and not one unattractive woman to be seen.

He also witness a whole array of unrealistic characters, including an animated cat and Robert Patrick (AKA Liquid Terminator from Terminator 2), as well as the stereotypical screaming boss. Let's not forget the big explosions and loud noises that always take centerstage in action movies.

Then I also liked 'S.W.A.T.' (2003) – PG-13 - Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, Michelle Rodriguez, LL Cool J, Jeremy Renner. Thrown into a desk job when his partner Gamble disobeys orders and shoots a hostage, Jim Street bides his time waited beside being demeaned on a daily basis.

When the commissioner brings in old school SWAT leader hondo to put together a young outfit, Street is offered to chance to retrain with the select team and is soon back on duty.

Meanwhile a man is pulled over by a black and white for a broken rear light, but is found to be a drug baron. SWAT are sent to escort the man to a secure prison but, as they take him into a holding centre he announces that whoever breaks him out of jail will get $100 million dollars.

SWAT soon have much to content with and must ensure that Montel does not escape. So if you are prepared for lots of running with guns, noise and macho posturing, then this should be enough to satisfy you here, trust me.

Another one is 'Stealth' (2005) – PG-13 - Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx. Sam Shepard, Joe Morton, Richard Roxburgh. Three pilots taking part in a secret military program are assigned to train a jet plane piloted by artificial intelligence in various air manoeuvres, but the program hits a snag when the plane develops its own warped consciousness, and it starts causing mayhem.

'Stealth' turns out to be exactly what it promises, which is a loud, dumb action movie. Unfortunately, the film isn't very entertaining. That said, I know films like 'Stealth' are supposed to be mindless fun and aren't supposed to be Oscar winners. So on that level alone this is a winner all ends up!

Then comes 'Vertical Limit' (2000) – PG-13 - Chris O’Donnell, Bill Paxton, Robin Tunney, Scott Glenn. In this high-octane action film, three climbers make stupid decisions at 26,000 feet, en route to the summit of K2, the world's second highest mountain.

The climber's peril thus necessitates a rescue, which puts additional people on the mountain and at risk of dying. That's it. The story is thus fairly thin, but the filmmakers insert all kinds of natural and human obstacles, conflict, and difficulties to rev up the action and excitement.

The film's CGI creates compelling tension. We have the illusion of vertical scale, or perspective, which translates into a needed sense of vertigo. The sensation that the characters could, at any moment, fall to their deaths is the film's strength.

My own last pick would be the always great to watch 'Blind Fury' (1989) – R - Rutger Hauer, Terry O’Quinn, Brandon Call, Lisa Blount. Fun, but stupid action movie with Rutger Hauer as a blind Vietnam vet who returns to the States years later, now a master swordsman despite his disability.

He seeks out his old Army buddy Terry O'Quinn and finds himself having to protect O'Quinn's son from drug dealers. A good cast goes a long way to help out a predictable script.

Rutger Hauer is clearly enjoying himself and does a great job of juggling the serious and the humorous. Terry O'Quinn does fine as the guy not really worthy of Hauer's help.

Plus, we have 'Silent Rage' (1982) – R - Chuck Norris, Ron Silver; 'White Line Fever' (1975) – PG - Jan-Michael Vincent, Kay Lenz, Slim Pickens; 'Universal Soldier: The Return' (1999) – R - Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michael Jai White, Heidi Schanz, Bill Goldberg; and finally 'Into The Sun' (2005) – R - Steven Seagal, Matthew Davis, Takao Osawa. These are all Widescreen Presentations (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
