'American Masters: This is Bob Hope'
(DVD / G / 2018 / PBS)

Overview: During his eight-decade career, Bob Hope was the only performer to achieve top-rated success in every form of mass entertainment: Vaudeville, Broadway, movies, radio, television, popular song and personal appearances. American Masters explores the entertainer's life with unprecedented access to his personal archives and clips from his classic films.

DVD Verdict: For those not in the know, Sir Leslie Townes "Bob" Hope, KBE, KC*SG, KSS (aka Bob Hope - May 29, 1903 to July 27, 2003) was an American comedian, vaudevillian, actor, singer, dancer, athlete and author.

With a career that spanned nearly 80 years, Hope appeared in more than 70 short and feature films, with 54 feature films with Hope as star, including a series of seven "Road" musical comedy movies with Bing Crosby as Hope's top-billed partner.

In addition to hosting the Academy Awards show nineteen times, more than any other host, he appeared in many stage productions and television roles, and was the author of 14 books. The song "Thanks for the Memory" is widely regarded as his signature tune.

This truly stunning and at times revealing American Masters documentary explores the entertainer's life with unprecedented access to his personal archives and clips from his classic films (The Road pictures, My Favorite Blonde), radio and TV shows.

We hear excerpts of Hope's writings voiced by Billy Crystal plus interviews with Woody Allen, Dick Cavett, Margaret Cho, Linda Hope, Kermit the Frog, Leonard Maltin, Conan O'Brien, Tom Selleck, Brooke Shields, Connie Stevens and writers including Sherwood Schwartz and biographer Richard Zoglin. So, if you thought you knew who Bob Hope was, ladies and gentlemen, think again! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
