'What Have You Done to Solange?' (2-Disc)
(Camille Keaton, Fabio Testi, Cristina Galbo, Karin Baal, Joachim Fuchsberger, et al / Blu ray+DVD / R / (1972) 2015 / Arrow Films UK - MVD Visual)
Overview: A sexually sadistic killer is preying on the girls of St. Mary's school. Student Elizabeth witnessed one of the murders, but her hazy recollections of a knife-wielding figure in black do nothing to further the police's investigations. Why is the killer choosing these young women? And what does it have to do with a girl named Solange?
Blu ray Verdict: Newly re-mastered in HD and from the original negative, this critically praised film from director Massimo Dallamano - cinematographer on both 'A Fistful of Dollars' and 'For a Few Dollars More' - brings yet another giallo classic into our homes. From a time lesser known to a lot of people, 'What Have You Done to Solange?' was not only the debut feature of actress Camille Keaton ('I Spit on Your Grave'), but was also loosely based on the Edgar Wallace mystery novel The Clue of the New Pin.
'What Have You Done to Solange?' tells the story of Italian teacher Enrico Rosseni who is having an affair with one of his lovely young students. While on an afternoon outing the two lovers learn that a fellow student is brutally murdered mere yards from them. Now other female students are being targeted by a killer with a sinister vendetta and Rosseni is looking like a suspect.
Not to give anything away here, for this is truly a film you have to see to believe, and as if the intriguing title alone were not enough, the slowly, but surely unfolding technique of the screenplay will leave your mouth watering for a big pay off. And, unlike 99% of otherwise good thrillers, this movie has an extraordinary denouement. The final minutes of the film will shock you, stun you, and have you starting the film all over again! Furthermore, the killer's identity in the film is not only a surprise, but it also makes perfect sense in the context of the story; a rare feat achieved in thrillers, but one which caps off the film quite nicely - in my humble opinion, of course.
