'Thin Lizzy - Are You Ready? Live At Rockpalast'
(Thin Lizzy / DVD / NR / 2009 / Eagle Vision)

Overview: Originally recorded for the German TV series ROCKPLAST, this musical release from rock band Thin Lizzy captures a live performance recorded in Loreley, Germany in 1981, and features songs like Are You Ready?, Jailbreak, and more.

DVD Verdict: Thin Lizzy are an Irish hard rock band who formed in Dublin, Ireland back in the late '60s. Led throughout their impressive recording career by bassist, songwriter and singer Phil Lynott, they hit the radio ari waves with classics such as "Whiskey in the Jar", "Jailbreak" and "The Boys Are Back in Town."

Amazingly, after Lynott died of a drug overdose, various incarnations of the band emerged over the years, but no more hits came forth - nothing!

So it is here, on this dodgy-filmed, yet musically triumphant video'd masterpiece that we see Lynott and the boys all in such fine, axe-weilding form ... albeit filmed in front of a very subdued Lorelei, Germany audience!

Filmed for the German music program Rockpalast, in 1981, 'Thin Lizzy - Are You Ready?' is still a tribute to a band that deserved more. I mean, if Def Leppard and Bon Jovi can still record hits and tour today, why wouldn't have Thin Lizzy been able to with as much success?!

The DVD contains the complete performance that night, which features a nice mix of the band's catalog. And although the camera work is stilted, the angles chosen bland, the colorization all over the place, you still know the band is spot on and well up for it musically.

Songs from Fighting (1975) include Suicide, and Rosalie, and with Memory Pain, the band even delves into the blues. Lizzy draws most heavily from their classic albums Jailbreak, and Black Rose. The classic anthem, The Boys Are Back In Town, is what most people know the band for. A speeded up version of Cowboy Song, packs a bit more punch than the album version. Jailbreak is always a favorite number live. All about excess, Got To Give It Up, is perhaps the most prophetic song Phil Lynott ever penned.

Emerald, and Black Rose, are a Lizzy specialty, an Irish folk legend given life in a rock song. Black Rose is a showcase for the harmony lead guitar playing of White and Gorham, and also features a drum solo by Downey. A mostly laid back Snowy White, who does a pretty good job of duplicating the licks of previous Thin Lizzy guitarists, seems so much more comfortable playing his own music, particularly on a smoking hot version of Sugar Blues, another song about drug abuse. Taking a pair of curtain calls in this performance, Thin Lizzy return to the stage to bring us both Emerald and Angel of Death (called Desaster here for some reason!), before finally leaving with a deft few waves of many (now departed) musician hands. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
