'Naked And Afraid: Season 1'
(2-Disc DVD / NR / 2015 / Cinedigm)
Overview: Twenty-one days. In the middle of nowhere. With no tools, no food, and no clothes. These naked strangers have no choice but to abandon inhibitions and join forces in a shocking attempt at survival in the most remote areas of the world.
DVD Verdict: Each week, a new pair of total strangers are faced with the ultimate survival challenge: survive for 21 days together with no clothes or supplies in some of the most dangerous environments in the world. In addition to the landscape itself working against the duo, the local wildlife stalks looks to prey on them as well. Of course, the biggest complication for any of the couples always ends up being their own clashing egos; but watching those unfold is half the fun (or more), isn't it!
The struggle to create fire and obtain the basic essentials for life is one of the elements that makes this show interesting. The dynamics surrounding the roles each participant must contribute are surprising in many instances.
Admittedly, I haven't seen other shows in this genre, but find this show engaging, not because of the blurred out nudity, but due to the mental and physical changes the participants endure, along with the ebb and flow of their interpersonal relationship.
In closing, we watch as the primary values of water, food and fire become must-haves for these "naked" people. The primitive environment is hostile. Even the sun can be an enemy. Each environment has its own set of threats, but, and again, that is one reason this show is interesting. Each team must evaluate its distinctive environment and quickly react to its threats and resources. In the early hours of each adventure, the smart survivalist benefits from a healthy dose of fear. 'Naked And Afraid: Season 1' comes on two discs and contains seven (7) full episodes. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
