'The Incredible Hulk - The Complete First Season'
(Bill Bixby, Lou Ferrigno, et al / 4-Disc DVD / NR / (1978) 2006 / Universal)

Overview: Dr. David Banner is a brilliant scientist but, one day, a lab experiment that he is working on goes terribly awry. Since that time, whenever he is under extreme stress, his body undergoes a transmogrification and he morphs into 'The Incredible Hulk.' The Hulk is about seven feet tall, hugely muscular and powerful, and has bright green skin. After destroying whatever threatens Dr. Banner, he morphs back to normal human form with only amnesia and tattered clothing as evidence of what just transpired. As you can well imagine, this situation is quite troubling for Dr. Banner and causes him no end of problems.

DVD Verdict: In light of the much maligned genre of science fiction; this show was under rated for it's time. Producer Ken Johnson didn't have a budget to put a sci-fi slant on the show. It proved to be one of the best dramas of the time. I really have to credit the late Bill Bixby for pulling this off. He really did a believable job of scientist Dr. David Banner. I only wish that Lou Ferrigno got to speak a few lines as the Hulk. If someone were to update this concept it would have to be with an ongoing storyline. The plots were a little one note but they still stand the test of time. I have more of an appreciation now for the show that it's off the air. Like Star Trek always attempted to show a moral with each episode; so did this show. I noticed that the quality of the writing varys, but the show never failed to draw you in. With all the CGI in the Hulk feature film the producers of the movie failed in one area. Showing the humanity of the Hulk as a character along with Dr. Banner's. This is where the TV show far surpasses the newer movie. And, just in case you weren't aware, after two pilot movies in 1977, "The Incredible Hulk" a two parts first movie originally aired on November 4th, 1977 and "A Death In The Family" two parts movie aired on November 27th, 1977. The show was first telecasted on March 10th, 1978 until its last telecast on May 12th, 1982 - for a total of 5 seasons and 83 episodes including the two pilot movies. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:

Commentary on original TV movie The Incredible Hulk by writer/director/producer Kenneth Johnson
"A Death In The family" Pilot Episode
