'Walker, Texas Ranger - The Complete First Season'
(Chuck Norris, Clarence Gilyard Jr., et al / 7-Disc DVD / NR / (1993) 2006 / Paramount)

Overview: Walker, a martial artist, and his partner Trivette are Texas Rangers. They make it their business to battle crime in Dallas and all around the State of Texas.

DVD Verdict: "Walker, Texas Ranger" had a style all it's own, and it really worked. It's not that the stories were light on plot. In fact, often they got into rather deep territory. But the execution was generally handled in a very minimalist manner that left plenty of time for special effects, fights and stunts! The regulars are all likeable enough that after a few episodes, they genuinely become friends, and ol' Chuck hadn't lost much off his awesome kicks that sent many a criminal dirtbag through windows! There are three crucial elements for a great Walker episode: A particularly vile villain (drug dealers, rapists, baby-stealing politicians), coolly delivered Chuck-isms ("When I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you," reprised from the great Code of Silence), and, to quote Jimmy Trivette (Clarence Gilyard), Walker's new, more by-the-book partner, the "squinty-eyed make-my-day stuff" that Walker punishingly dispenses near the 40-minute mark of nearly every episode. When you've got Chuck Norris, you don't need A-list guest stars, but Walker's first season does feature some familiar faces, including the future Spider-Man Tobey Maguire ("The Prodigal Son"), Stuart Whitman ("The Reunion"), and a post-Wonder Years Danica "Winnie" McKellar ("Stolen Lullaby"). The only negative is that there are no closed captions or subtitles on these discs. A little consideration for the deaf would have been greatly appreciated. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) and comes with the Special Features of all 26 first season episodes digitally remastered from the 1993-94 season on 7 discs discs.
