'The Ellen Show - The Complete Series'
(Ellen DeGeneres, Cloris Leachman, et al / 2-Disc DVD / NR / (2001) 2006 / Sony Pictures)

Overview: Ellen Richmond decides to trade the stresses of her fast-track, big-city lifestyle for the slower pace of her quieter hometown, where she is known and loved. It remains to be seen, however, whether or not returning to her hometown, a fishbowl of a place, and her eccentric mother, Dot, and scatter-brained sister, Catherine, is the best course of action. At home, Ellen becomes reacquainted with her senior prom date, Rusty, who thinks they can pick up where they left off, and her befuddled high school teacher, Mr. Munn. Though worlds apart from the people who love her, Ellen begins to adjust to a very different way of life.

DVD Verdict: Unfortunately, 'The Ellen Show' received poor enough ratings and audience reaction to justify it being cancelled after 12 episodes, leaving 6 episodes unseen. The remaining 6 episodes received their first airing on the Paramount Comedy Channel in the UK, at 2.30pm on weekday afternoons! In total, 18 episodes were made but only 13 were aired in the US. That all said, this was an enjoyable (albeit safe) show, and no matter how much I tried to get people to watch it, I guess my grass roots campaign wasn't quite enough. Canceled. I think that the network really missed the boat on this one. Ellen Degeneres is hands down one of the funniest people alive, and if CBS had promoted this show it would have been a huge success. What ever happened to giving shows a chance to obtain an audience? Remember that 'Seinfeld' had no audience when it started! Plus, what's with moving the shows around? Even when somebody likes a show they never know when it might be on (I couldn't find the show Norm if my life had depended on it... even with a TVGuide). The networks have decided to pump up the worthless material so much to get people to watch them and then they leave good shows to fend for themselves. Something has got to change, or the network shows are going to continue spiraling downward. Anyway, moving along ... Ellen is invited to return to her hometown of Clark to receive an achievement award, where she's faced with the fact that the town has not changed one bit. Her sister Catherine is still involved with the wrong men, her mother keeps her room exactly the same as she left it, her old high school teacher Mr. Munn is still teaching, and Rusty Carnouk, Ellen's prom date, still thinks he and Ellen might have a future together. Then without warning, Ellen receives a phone call saying her L.A. dotcom company has gone bankrupt and she does the last thing she thought she'd do - she stays in Clark. Funnily enough, DeGeneres had come into this show direct from the cancellation of her ABC sitcom! And, like her ABC sitcom, her character was, yep, gay. Unlike her ABC sitcom, it was actually funny. Ellen was in good company, surrounded by a supporting cast full of actors from a wide array of failed CBS TV series. The chemistry was great, the scripts were good. All the cards seemed to be in place. Except for the audience one. A roaring ratings failure from Day 1, 'The Ellen Show' was on just about every pundit's list as one of the sure-thing casualties of the fall ... which was a shame. These are Full Screen presentations (1.78:1), has all the 18 complete season episodes on 2 discs, and comes the Special Features of just an English Language Track.
