'Rio'
(Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, et al / DVD / G / 2011 / 20th Century Fox)

Overview: This comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a flightless macaw who acts more human than bird. When Blu, the last of his kind, discovers there’s another – and that she’s a she – he embarks on an adventure to magical Rio. There, he meets Jewel and a menagerie of vivid characters who help Blu fulfill his dream and learn to fly.

FYI - Sales of 'RIO' exceeded 2.5 million units in its first six days, the company announced today. Premium two-disc DVD and Blu-ray combo packs represented 40 percent of retail sales!

DVD Verdict: A synopsis isn't really needed here, as, basically Blu, the last of his kind flightless macaw, discovers there’s another – and that she’s a she – and so he embarks on an adventure to magical Rio!

Well, I guess I just gave you one anyway - you're welcome! Anyway, not just a kids movie (no way, Jose!), adults will enjoy it also, for sure. The overall animation is both glorious and complete with truly eye-popping colors. Blu ray need not apply, as DVD format is just perfect in its rendering and clarity.

The detailing in such things as just the cross-thatching texture on the beaks of the macaws, and the way the feathers were rendered - some of those details added to the movie subtly for the benefit of bird people to notice and appreciate, one would imagine! Indeed, there are a lot of those little treats tossed in, like the pigeon-toed way the parrots walked. Loved it, loved it.

The music is great too. Especially the opening titles theme and segment, done in an almost gentle and ethereal way as you're guided into the jungle setting populated with what are, too many, very ethereal creatures. So well done.

Set, primarily (of course) in Brazil, there were a lot of characters originating from Minnesota, so some Brazilian and Minnesota jokes and excess puns would have been fun - but, for the most part, sadly no. That said, and although some of the music is hip-hop, the beloved Brazilian obsession with soccer is portrayed in a most hilarious manner! This is a Widescreen presentation (2.40:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
