'Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue'
(Kristin Chenoweth, Michael Sheen, Mae Whitman, Lucy Liu, Pamela Adlon, et al / 2-Disc Blu Ray+DVD / G / 2010 / Disney)

Overview: Years before meeting Wendy and the Lost Boys, Tinker Bell met Lizzy, a little girl with a steadfast belief in the power of pixie dust and the magic land of fairies. During the fairies’ summer visit to the flowering meadows of England, two very different worlds unite for the first time and Tink develops a special bond with a curious child in need of a friend. As her fellow fairies launch a daring rescue, Tinker Bell takes a huge risk, putting her own safety and the future of all fairykind in jeopardy.

Blu-Ray: Now, even though this is a straight-to-DVD production, you will simply be amazed by the high quality of the script (yes, predictable by adult standards but touching), the production values (animation and drawing), and the caliber of the voice-over actors (Michael Sheen, Kristen Chenoweth, Lucy Liu).

Indeed, this is the third of a multi-movie series that started with 'Tinker Bell,' continued with 'Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure,' and, thankfully, news of a fourth reportedly in the works.

Our family loved 'Tinker Bell,' the first movie, which was in theaters first. It told the story of how Tinker Bell came to be initiated into Pixie Hollow and to find her talent as a fairy - despite her protestations and disastrous attempts to try other talents, she is a Tinker, a fairy who makes and fixes things.

The timeframe is long before Tink meets up with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, but is set in Victorian England, where there are still horses and carriages but also "horseless carriages," which Tink gets to "tinker" with, of course.

The storyline is perfect for our own day and age - a little girl with an active imagination has a single dad, a scientist who is too busy, practical, and short-sighted to take much interest in his little girls's fanciful stories and drawings. Lizzie is in love with fairies, but can't get her father to even listen to her "foolishness" - until Tinker Bell enters the scene.

Tink gets captured in the fairy house Lizzie has built, and, when she can't escape, the two make friends and Tink teaches Lizzie all about fairies - even teaching her to fly. Through the efforts of all Tink's fairy friends and Lizzie's own winning personality and willingness to "believe," Father is brought around.

There are many moments of triumph when the fairies outwit the house cat, build contraptions to get themselves out of tricky situations, and to divert Father from his intention to display one of the fairies as a "specimen." My girls whooped with glee at each of these triumphs, and were thrilled that Father eventually came around. Their faces lit up when Tink sprinkled pixie dust on Lizzie and taught her to fly.

Unlike the Pixar productions, there aren't any hidden meanings or social innuendoes to appeal to adults in this fairy story. But it's hardly difficult to watch, and if you've got a little girl to watch it with, it's actually pretty joyful. Just believe.
