'Twisted Sister - Double Live'
(Twisted Sister / 2-Disc DVD / NR / 2011 / Eagle Eye Media)

Overview: 'Twisted Sister - Double Live' is a double-volume set featuring Twisted Sister live shows from the start of their recording career (in 1982) and the beginning of their reunion in 2001.

DVD Verdict: Before they blew up as a metal hair band, Twisted Sister spent quite a few years on the road hitting small, medium and large venues - in an attempt to get their name out, no matter how large an audience ventured out that night.

Prowling the New York club scene, building a large following show after show, and setting attendance records with said legendary performances, in 1982 - and before recording their debut album, Under The Blade in the UK - TS said farewell to the clubs with a blistering performance at the North Stage Theater.

And so their first show in this incredible set is a near-ninety minute evenflow of a set recorded at the North Stage Theater in Long Island in 1982. So-called "farewell" show or not, this is one balls out performance from TS. Encompassing a set list that only the most devoted of fans would recognize, the tight-as-tight-can-get Snider and the boys ploughs through such songs as "What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)," "Bad Boys of Rock 'n' Roll,," "Shoot 'em Down" and "You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll," and among others, cover versions of "Leader of the Pack" and the Rolling Stones' "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It)."

True TS aficionados will really enjoy the second show here in this package too. Fast-forwarding nearly two decades later to the New York Steel show in 2001, it was actually held just 11 weeks after the tragic events of 9/11. Indeed, the entire show benefitted the New York Police & Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit fund.

And even though the two shows were some 13 years apart, the reunited Twisted Sister were as frantic, as raw, and yet as professionally musically perfect as you could ever have hoped for. And yes, it sowed the seeds of their future reunion that very same night.

And whilst the stage set-up is sparse (there's no large light show, no pyrotechnics), and the visuals are less than flattering for each band member, the entire NY Steel show has never been released before - which makes it a visual musical gem to behold.

The show opens with a "What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)," before piledriving into "The Kids Are Back." One very true, and powerfully made point throughout this DVD. Indeed, Snider's powerhouse vocals had obviously not lost any of their intensity in the band's music scene absence, as he doesn't miss a beat throughout.

Snider later dedicates an intense "Burn In Hell" " ... to those scumbags in the world who would try to take our freedom from us," and along those lines, "We're Not Gonna Take It" served as a monster rallying cry for all those New Yorkers there that night - given what had gone down just 11 days prior. Simply incredible, hairs-up-on-the-arm vibe, for sure.

In closing, Twisted Sister's return was a triumphant, welcome one and served as a platform for their return to the musical genre fold. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.66:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
