For those unaware, The Best Of Bob Shane is a specially priced 2CD set which covers the solo career of Kingston Trio founding member Bob Shane.

Shane’s work with the trio was the heart of the folk-pop revival in the late 50’s, early sixties, resulting in hits like Tom Dooley, MTA and Sloop John B. This work literally established acoustic music as an art form.

The made the clean cut look with matching stripe shirts a famous look. And with 4 albums simultaneously in the top 10, appearances on college campuses across the country as well as major network TV the norm.

A real no brainer for any Kingston Trio fan, most all of these tracks on this glorious collection were originally recorded 50 years ago when Shane was looking for direction and to change direction after the Trio broke up. But that’s not the end of the story. As solid as the Glaser Brothers recorded tracks are/were they got some reimagining in 2019 as well. This excellent new release by Silverwolf Records is a nifty collection that showcases a timeless folk/country set that’s everything you would want it to be.

In all truth, I found myself singing along to almost every song, but especially those from The World Needs a Melody, and I have not sung aloud in years so that was rather lovely. Some of the songs are about tender love in one’s older years (unlike the passionate love in the early Kingston Trio songs re: Tom Dooley, etc.). Some are humorous, and I especially love his rendition of the old children’s classic The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night. That said, each song is just a true gem!
