Title - Squirrel Nut Zippers: Starring In Fat City
Artist - Squirrel Nut Zippers

For those unaware, the Squirrel Nut Zippers have sold over three million albums in total throughout their career. Their most successful album, Hot (1996), has sold over one million copies and was certified Platinum by the RIAA.

This album’s theme was first conceived thirty years ago while recording in Metairie, Louisiana, where Jimbo Mathus first learnt the city had attempted to rebrand its entertainment district as Fat City - a cut-rate alternative to the French Quarter. Though the rebranding failed, he was haunted by the image of a place trying to be something it wasn’t and so spent his time there absorbing the shabby melodramas unfolding within the fading nightclubs and strip clubs.

Fast-forward to 2025 and he began weaving decades of material into a long-form recording - part Beggar’s Opera, part literary narrative, and rooted in jazz and cabaret. The central character, Lil Tony, is based on his grandfather, Tony Malvezzi. He began the 20th century as a bootlegger and juke joint operator before becoming a post-WWII big band promoter at venues like the Peabody in Memphis and the Old Absinthe House in New Orleans. Thus, the stories within Fat City are drawn directly from his memories.

To capture the proper intrigue, they recorded while on tour with the SNZ Christmas Caravan in December 2025. They set up microphones in historic spaces like Turner Hall and the Stoughton Opera House, utilizing the natural acoustics of these lovely old theaters.

The result is a sprawling musical narrative - part fiction, part non-fiction, and part autobiography. It showcases the full scope of the Zippers’ dedication to theater and craft, one which he hopes brings joy and mystery to all their fans, past and present.

The album opens on the rambunctious, yet smoldering Dark Eyes, the piano-driven jazzy blues tune Lil’ Tony’s Theme (The Jig Is Up), the swarmy Il Campanile and the slow trot-hued ambiance of Where The Wild Things Go, before they continue onwards with tracks such as the smoldering Summerstorm, the old time rag of Don’t Doubt Me Babe, onto the low slung shuffle of Town Where Nobody Lives and the joyfully enriched King Of The World (Joe’s Theme), before rounding the set out on an aching yearn that threads through Lil’ Tony’s Last Cab Ride, the emphatically sculpted Dirty River, coming to a close on the atmospheric .40 second Our Lady Of Sorrow.
