Title - Enemy [CD]
Artist - KMFDM

For those unaware, society is in shambles, fascism is in fashion, and the Ultra Heavy Beat remains resolute and resolved to rise up and rip the system! 42 years of conceptual continuity and distinction thru diversity, KMFDM is back, declaring itself the ENEMY with this 24th album!

Kommanded by the songwriting and vocal power of Sascha Käpt’n K Konietzko and Lucia Cifarelli, and backed by the percussive onslaught of Andy Selway, the band is now joined by London six-string slinger Tidor Nieddu bringing his own bold and vivid guitar flavors.

On top of that, having hypnotized audiences on the band’s 40th anniversary tour with her live rendition of Professional Killer, Annabella Konietzko also appears with her own hit-list on the explosive YOÜ, marking her songwriting debut with KMFDM.

Never a band to take the easy path, ENEMY delivers some of KMFDM’s most stylistically challenging, most politically scathing material yet - from the dance/rock melodicism of Oubliette to the darkened grooves of Catch & Kill, the satirical brute force thrash of Outernational Intervention to the vicious and hyperbolic industrial/metal of L’Etat, the funky throb of Vampyre to the cheeky dub of Stray Bullet 2.0.

KMFDM keeps moving, dancing on the blood-dimmed tide, roaring as a rough beast to make noise against a world that demands the silence of ignorance. Join the Ultra Heavy Beat and make yourself the ENEMY of hypocrisy, discrimination, and injustice!

Personally, I like how they experimented with this album more than their last few, especially the instrumentals and vocals. I’ll admit I have a slight prejudice against their newer albums because I’m a big 80’s-90’s KMFDM fan, but this album is their recent best by far.

Stand out tracks for me definitely include the title track ENEMY, which actually sounds like a recycled song from Hell Yeah or Let Go, with the lyrics reminding me of TikTok sh*tposts (which cringed me out a little; such as No room for attention span, and If you can’t walk, crawl, and We are enemy.)

OUBLIETTE has noticeable amount of autotune but the song is incredibly catchy and I loved this song way before the album came out. Possibly my favorite out of all tracks. L’ETAT and OUTERNATIONAL INTERVENTION are amazingly old school with grungy guitar riffs, which surprised me as it sounds similar to their earlier stuff. Would make a great videogame soundtrack, in my humble opinion.

YOU actually surprised me as it wasn’t called Jealousy, as I was getting pretty sick of that word by halfway through the song! It’s theme is way different than the usual KMFDM songs so it felt really out of place but it’s a great debut for Annabella, her voice itself suited the song perfectly.

The last one for me was STRAY BULLET 2.0 as dub songs are a hit or miss for me, so I expected a Stray Bullet remix not a dub, which kinda sorta left me a wee bit disappointed. But I got over it quickly some three plays later and now think it is a really good dub song ... just not for me. [U.S.]
