For those unaware, the power of music connects American musicians with their West African counterparts in in a historical concert not seen in over 20 years.
March, 1971, several dozen African American musicians traveled from NYC to Accra, Ghana. Their primary purpose was to perform alongside African musicians in a 14-hour concert called Soul To Soul. Ultimately, their journey was about personal roots, their ancestral homeland, history and discovery.
This documentary concert captures the story of black American souls connecting with black West African souls through the power of music. Now available for the first time in almost 20 years.
Featuring a stellar lineup including Wilson Pickett, Ike and Tina Turner backed by the Ikettes, Santana with Willie Bobo on percussion, Les McCann and Eddie Harris, The Staple Singers and The Voices if East Harlem, they’re joined on stages by a host of Ghanaian musicians.

This vibrant and historically significant 1971 concert opens on a couple from Ike & Tina Turner; the R&B gem Soul To Soul and one of the greatest musical works of the 20th century River Deep-Mountain High, then we get the beautiful sounds of The Voices Of East Harlem’ Run, Shaker Life before we are gifted a trio from The Staple Singers; the meaningful When Will We Be Paid, the nostalgic flashback cut Are You Sure, and the sing, sing, sing vibe of He’s Alright.
Up next is a brilliant Santana moment in the form of a duo that come complete with lush tone, furious drums, and expertly contained explosiveness Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen, and they are in turn backed by a trio from the coolest of dudes Wilson Pickett; the soulful blues of In the Midnight Hour, the grooved funk of the aptly-titled Funky Broadway, the set coming to a close on the dynamic drum-tastic Land Of 1000 Dances.
