Queen is just pure unadulterated fun, and if you disagree, I’m just gonna assume you’re the most miserable person that ever loved! That said, I should fully admit that A Night At The Opera is the first Queen album I’ve ever listened to all the way through since the beginning of their time!
Of course, I’m very familiar with all their albums, their greatest hits and near misses, but I’ve never actually gotten the chance to listen to this full-length project from them before today - and I was not let down!
Nope, I was not even close to being disappointed for A Night At The Opera offers up some very fun glam rock with its grandiose style of instrumentation and performances while at the same time providing some interesting and substantive ideas; much like some of the song structures being progressive or some genuinely creative instrumentalisam.
Freddie Mercury kills it on his end, we all know that, for he does so on everything that he lends his vocals to. I mean, he is, for my money, the most iconic frontman that has ever lived, and so combine that with his dynamic vocals and his shining moments of songwriting, and what you get is an album of gems from start to finish.
Brian May’s guitar work is also fantastic, the virtuosity of his playing adding a beguiling tone to the experience and both Roger and John also play their respective parts here to the best of their abilities.
The track listing is incredibly tight with some invigorating, fun, creative and powerhaus iconic moments, which rarely leaves a dull moment to be recorded, and so given this very same album established them as the glam rock band of the 70’s, you will not be disappointed here in 2025 on this 50th Anniversary Remaster to hear the much loved classics alongside some of their fan-beloved tracks, of that you have my word.
Stand out tracks for me are the opener Death On Two Legs, which builds up this menacing atmosphere and then the song kicks in and it makes it one of the most aggressively rhythmic cuts of them all, and then we get The Prophet’s Song; which is the longest song on the record at almost 8 and a half minutes, and is also the only fully prog rock track on the album.
Another one would be Love Of My Life, which as we all know now is a really beautiful ballad - it’s very simple and pretty and the vocals alone sell it - but, in truth, there isn’t a single cut here that captures the very specific magic that Bohemian Rhapsody does. The song is just, well, chillingly outstanding on so many levels.
