Title - [NOV 28] Rock The Plaza
Artist - Various
For those not in the know, it takes a lot of time, money, and dedication, to restore anything of historical importance. And the Plaza Theatre in Palm Springs, California was just the type of venue that required these three key ingredients. Opened to the public for the first time in 1936, this classic Art Deco building was the site of many grand events over the past 100 years.
And so it was on November 11th, 2022, spearheaded by Brian Ray (Sir Paul McCartney’s guitar gunslinger for the past 20+ years), a gala fundraiser was held to restore one of Palm Springs’ most treasured landmarks, the historic Plaza Theatre.
Ray and his co-musical director Spike Edney (Queen, Clapton, Elton, Aretha) put together an all-star band to back the four headliners for the evening’s show. And what headliners they were: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Alice Cooper; Paul Rodgers (highly acclaimed lead singer of Bad Company and Free); legendary modern rock artist and Palm Springs native Joshua Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures) and Australian guitar goddess Orianthi (Michael Jackson, Richie Sambora).
The backing band behind these legends in addition to Ray and Edney included Matt Sorum (Guns N’ Roses), Eric Singer (KISS, Black Sabbath), John Button (Shakira, The Who, Sheryl Crow) and the guitarist’s guitarist, Pete Thorn. Their musicianship inspired Alice Cooper to say after his set, “what a band… best band in the land right there!”

Opening this INCREDIBLE live set is a quartet from the formidable rock ’n’ roller himself Alice Cooper - the jubilant No More Mister Nice Guy, the pounding, fist-clenched I’m Eighteen, the propellent Under My Wheels and as Alice himself says This is a sing-along. If you don’t know this song you never went to school), the feisty School’s Out/Another Brick In The Wall, and then Joshua Homme delivers a massively impressive Bowie impression on Let’s Dance, before he then brings us the languishing ballad Something Stupid (with Orianthi), who does her own thing on a countrified These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ and then comes a dutiful duet with Brian Ray on I Got You Babe.
Up next is another couple from Homme, the first being the easy going soft rock of Right Down The Line and the grittier guitar rocker I Sat By The Ocean, and then they are backed by one of the greatest throats in rock ’n’ roll history (so the announcer states), the bad ass Paul Rodgers, who digs deep into the rhythmic beauty of Can’t Get Enough, the soulful blues of I Thank You and a melodious ballad in the form of Feel Like Makin’ Love, before Jay Nailor launches into a stunning Rebel Rebel, Alice comes back to cover The Who on a rowdy My Generation, with Rodgers closing the show on Free’s massive blockbuster All Right Now.
