Title - [NOV 14] Veni Redemptor Gentium
Artist - Concordian Dawn
For those unaware, New York-based early music ensemble Concordian Dawn presents Veni Redemptor Gentium, a joyful and introspective musical celebration of the Christmas season centered around songs spanning the thirteenth through the fifteenth centuries.
The album includes beautiful and rarely heard repertoire from the medieval holidays alongside seasonal and traditional jewels, plus two world-premiere recordings of works by Australian-born composer David Yardley, whose music has been described as “transcendent medieval-inspired music for modern times.”
The resplendent sound world of Veni Redemptor Gentium offers moments of peace, reflection, and enjoyment throughout the holiday season and beyond.

On what is a most magical music experience, first up is an aching yearn that opens, but is soon replaced with a joyous choir on This Holy Tym Oure Lord Was Born, the strident Isaiah and Sybil’s Prophecies, the tonally forthright Gabriel fram Heven King, and the ethereal Veni, redemptor gentium before we are gifted the yearnful Kuando el rey Nimrod, the harmonic Alma redemptoris mater, a stunningly soulful Ave, regina caelorum/Alma redemptoris mater, the vibrantly spirited Orientis partibus, and then come the atmospheric Alle psallite cum luya, the delicate Psallite regi glorie: Thompson and the triumphant Hail Mary, full of grace.
Along next are the graceful swirls and twirls that accompany Personent Hodie, the organic sounds made within Beata viscera, the softness of Vox Clamantis in Deserto and the choir-imbibed Dum medium silentium, and then we get brought forth the effective Magnificat, an angelic Now make we mirthe all and sum, the elegant Quem pastores laudavere, the set rounding out on the impassioned Verbum caro factum est, the all-embracing Ther is no rose of swych vertu, closing on the masterful In Adventu Domini and the dutifully crafted Be mery, be mery.
