Title - Conceptions
Artist - Geoffrey Dean Quartet

Washington D.C.-based jazz pianist Geoffrey Dean releases his new quartet album Conceptions featuring the great Harish Raghavan on bass as well as Justin Copeland on trumpet, and Eric Binder on drums.

Dr. Geoffrey Dean is a jazz pianist, composer, author and educator currently performing in the Washington DC area. Dean has recorded and performed with notable jazz musicians across the globe including Terell Stafford, Steve Turre, Greg Tardy, and many others.

Dr. Dean recently published an educational book on jazz harmony titled Kenny Kirkland’s Harmonic and Rhythmic Language: A Model For The Modern Jazz Pianist. Dean has also contributed as an author on modern jazz piano approaches for the Masterclass series in Downbeat Magazine.

“Conceptions” is a contemporary jazz quartet album of all original compositions from pianist Geoffrey Dean, the great Harish Raghavan on bass, Eric Binder on drums, and Justin Copeland on Trumpet. The album serves as a compliment to the quartet’s first album “Foundations”. While “Foundations” paid tribute to the group’s influences, “Conceptions” is a collection of 5 originals from Dean, three from Copeland and two from Binder which showcase a broad palette of musical styles within the jazz genre.

This includes more contemporary harmonies, rhythms, and interplay on swing, straight-eighth, odd meter compositions and more. Trust me when I say that this quartet features some of the most in demand working, talented instrumentalists in jazz today.

1. Came and Went
2. Phoenix Rising
3. Amidst A Dream
4. Conflagration
5. Road To Somewhere
6. Song For Hannah
7. Spiral
8. Prism
9. Arrival
10. What May Come

This quite stunning new musical testament to anything and everything great within the Quartet music scene, opens on the luxuriant Came and Went and then we get the joyfully vivacious Phoenix Rising, the languishing Amidst A Dream, before we are brought forth the decadent Conflagration and a resplendent Road To Somewhere.

Then we get the all-embracing ebb and flow of Song For Hannah which is itself backed seamlessly by the upbeat dance floor swirls and twirls of Spiral, the simply sparkling Prism, the album rounding out on an aching yearn that pulses through Arrival, coming to an all too soon close on the gentle, yet veritably shimmering balladry of What May Come.
