Title - 'The Christians: Deluxe Edition' (Cherry Pop)
Artist - The Christians

The Christians - which refers to the surname of the three brothers that were originally in the line-up, and is also coincidentally guitarist Henry Priestman's middle name - were a musical ensemble from Liverpool, England. They had many UK and international chart hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but sadly Roger Christian died in early 1998 from a brain tumour.

With a frontman - Garry Christian - who quickly became the groups unique selling point ala his distinctive bald-headed look and velvet-smooth soulful tones, The Christians couldn't put a musical foot wrong in the UK charts for the longest time. Indeed, their first three singles all made the Top 40 in Britain, and this newly-released and Deluxe Edition of that very same debut album (The Christians, 1987) entered the UK Albums Chart at #2. Amazingly, for an unknown band at the time, it eventually sold over a million copies.

The highest placed single from it was the soulful 'Ideal World,' which reached #14 in the UK Singles Chart. Other chart hits were the brilliant bounce of 'Forgotten Town,' the bluesy flow of 'When The Fingers Point' and both 'Save A Soul In Every Town' and 'Hooverville.' And during all this, come early 1988 the band even had time to release a cover of the Isley Brothers' 'Harvest for the World,' a #8 (in the UK) singles chart hit that had all the proceeds going to charity.

Amazingly, as I remember buying the vinyl of this myself back in the day, 2012 sees the 25th anniversary of the original release of The Christians' self-titled debut album! Which has enabled Cherry Red Records, as always to celebrate the groundbreaking occasion by releasing this Deluxe 2-disc edition of the album, packed with extra material. So, alongside all the orginal tracks from the vinyl release we also now get some B-sides from the album’s single releases, along with some uniquely interesting remixes of the hits themselves! Oh, and let's not forget the brand new liner sleeve notes from Garry Christian together with some rare images from the time.

As it turned out, the album The Christians became better known in North America, at least) for two later hits: 'Words' and 'The Bottle.' Anyway, all ends up, no matter where you live in the world, this debut is their best. Chock full of very uplifting music, in this two-disc format it is a winner all ends up!
