Title - 'Colour: Deluxe Edition' (Cherry Pop)
Artist - The Christians

The Christians - which refers to the surname of the three brothers that were originally in the line-up, and is also coincidentally guitarist Henry Priestman's middle name - were a musical ensemble from Liverpool, England. They had many UK and international chart hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but sadly Roger Christian died in early 1998 from a brain tumour.

With a frontman - Garry Christian - who quickly became the groups unique selling point ala his distinctive bald-headed look and velvet-smooth soulful tones, The Christians couldn't put a musical foot wrong in the UK charts for the longest time. Indeed, their first three singles (all from their self-titled debut album) all made the Top 40 in Britain, and amazingly, for an unknown band at the time, it eventually sold over a million copies.

Their second album, Colour released in 1990, reached #1 in the UK Albums Chart and yielded the international hit 'Words,' which reached #18 in the UK Singles Chart. The second single from the album, 'I Found Out,' which reached #56 in the UK proved to be the last chart-entering cut from the album, sadly. In truth, Colour was built on the back of the success of that greatly-lauded debut album, but it really does feature some great songs. All sung in their distinctive gospel soul style (indeed, one of the tracks, 'Hour of Need' features the London Community Gospel Choir) all the tracks are delivered with great panache - and still serve as a delightful trip down memory lane.

In 1992, the following LP, Happy in Hell charted at #18 on the UK Album Charts, but after a Greatest Hits album was released in 1993, the band disbanded.

Today, Cherry Red Records, as always, has remastered and expanded this still-wonderful Christians album and packed it with extra material. So, alongside all the orginal tracks from the vinyl release we also now get some B-sides from the album’s single releases along with some unique remixes! Oh, and let's not forget the brand new liner sleeve notes from Garry Christian together with some rare images from the time.

With a lead singer whose mellow tones and captivating crecendos pleasantly haunting you for many years to come, Colour may not have been as successful as their self-titled debut, but all the close harmony singing does make for a complex and matchless sound. And, for my money, such wonderment comes perfectly together at its best on timeless tracks like 'Greenbank Drive,' 'Words' and the stunning album opener, 'Man Don't Cry.'
