Title - At The Mercy Of Manannán
Artist - M-Opus
For those not in the know, At The Mercy Of Manannán is the third album from Irish progressive rock group, M-Opus (Jonathan Casey, Mark Grist, PJ O’Connell, Colin Sullivan, James Dunne), and their finest, most incisive yet.
As with all their albums, this hypothetically comes from a year in rock history, 1972, with the sound and production that implies. From lush, symphonic rock, to blazing, virtuosic instrumentals and lavish melodic tracks, the album aims to be nothing less than a new classic.
1. Setting Off
2. Riverflow
3. Whirlpool
4. To The Other Side
5. Na Bruídaí
6. Valley Of Elah
7. Scaling Novas
8. Carnivale
Composed by Film/TV composer Jonathan Casey (David Cross Band), and a new member of the band, guitar virtuoso PJ O’Connell, the album kicks off in fine style with the veritably shimmering Setting Off and the gently frenetic prog rock of Riverflow and then we get the atmospherically-charged, drum-led, prog masterpiece Whirlpool and the synth, Deep Purple-organ-hued appeal of To The Other Side.
Along next is one of my own personal favorites from the new album, the shimmering, melodic prog-rock bounce of the near 8 minute Na Bruídaí, which is itself backed by the acoustically electric ambiance of Valley Of Elah, the recording rounding out on the cultured Scaling Novas, closing on the cinematically-sculpted Carnivale.
