Title - Bossa Nova at Carnegie Hall
Artist - Various Artists

For those unaware, recorded November 21, 1962, on a rainy night at New York’s Carnegie Hall, this gathering of Brazilian musical legends was the idea of Sidney Frey, President of Audio Fidelity Records.

Two months before the concert, Frey had traveled to Brazil to recruit performers. His trip yielded results as Sergio Mendes, Carmen Costa, Bola Sete, Jose Paulo, Luiz Bonfa, Joao Gilberto, Oscar Castro-Neves, and many others, were booked for the concert, and eventually displayed their virtuoso talents to a packed house of 3,000 fans.

Out of print for decades, Bossa Nova at Carnegie Hall returns in a limited edition 180-gram vinyl pressing.

1. One Note Samba - Sergio Mendes Quartet
2. Bossa Nova York - Carmen Costa, Bola Sete, Jose Paulo
3. Zelao - Sergio Ricardo
4. Nao Faz Assim - Oscar Neves Quartet
5. Influencia Do Jazz - Oscar Neves Quartet
6. Mahna De Carnival - Luis Bonfa
7. Mahan De Carnival - Agostino Dos Santos, Luiz Bonfa, Oscar Neves
8. Felicidade - Agostino Dos Santos, Luiz Bonfa, Oscar Neves Quartet
9. Outra Vez - Joao Gilberto, Miltinho
10. Influencia Do Jazz - Carlos Lyra, Oscar Neves Quartet
11. Ah! Se Eu Pudese - Ana Lucia, Oscar Neves Quartet
12. Bossa Nova En New York - Caetano Zama, Oscar Neves Quartet
13. Barquinho - Roberto Menescal, Oscar Neves Quartet
14. Amor No Samba - Noramando, Oscar Neves Quartet
15. Passarinho - Chico Feitosa, Oscar Neves Quartet

This simply magnificently-crafted, wholly-embracing, and musically delicious recording opens on the maravillosa musica of the Sergio Mendes Quartet’s One Note Samba and the vigorously imparted Bossa Nova York (by Carmen Costa, Bola Sete, and Jose Paulo), and they are followed by the que maravilha of Sergio Ricardo’s Zelao, the infectious melodies made within the drum-held instrumental Nao Faz Assim (by the Oscar Castro-Neves Quartet), and then we get brought forth Influencia Do Jazz, which showcases the influence and counter influence of two great styles (again from the Oscar Castro-Neves Quartet), Luis Bonfa’s delicately playful Manha De Carnaval, and the absolutely stunning Manha De Carnaval (by Agostinho dos Santos, Luiz Bonfa, and Oscar Castro-Neves Quartet).

The same names then come together once again for the impassioned Felicidade before Joao Gilberto and Milton Banana bring us the foot-tapping, Parisian rhythms within Outra Vez, and they are in turn backed seamlessly by the sterner fare of Carlos Lyra and the Oscar Castro-Neves Quartet’s rousing Influencia Do Jazz, next is the subtle Samba hipsway within Ana Lucia and Oscar Castro-Neves Quartet’s Ah! Se Eu Pudesse, then comes the veritable master of jingles and the bossa nova, Caetano Zama and the Oscar Castro-Neves Quartet’s Bossa Nova Em Nova York, the recording rounding out on the fluidly gravitating Barquinho (by Roberto Menescal and the Oscar Castro-Neves Quartet), Normando and the Oscar Castro-Neves Quartet’s short, but sweet Amor No Samba, closing on the atmospheric dips and melodies, oh-so gently played by Chico Feitosa and the Oscar Castro-Neves Quartet on Passarinho.
