Title - [APRIL 14] The Price We Pay for Love
Artist - Julie Christensen

For those unaware, Julie Christensen’s story is woven into decades of Roots Music. A veteran of Leonard Cohen’s bands, she co-fronts post- punk rockers Divine Horsemen, which rebooted to release new work in 2021.

While the pandemic was still going on, Julie moved from Nashville to NM and began the 2+ year process of recording The Price We Pay for Love, out April 4th, 2023 on WireBird Records.

Recorded with bassist and string arranger Terry Lee Burns, a wide range of influences inform this genre-hybrid, showcasing Julie’s butterscotch vocals in dialog with Terry’s bass and his string arrangements.

Julie also enlisted many longtime musician friends to perform and write for this project, a real labor of love for her.

1. Hejira
2. Goldbridge Road
3. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
4. How He Lost Her
5. Save Your Love for Me
6. A Remark You Made
7. All The River
8. Away with Words
9. Can’t Find My Way Home
10. Hilltop

This genuinely soulful, wholly organic new recording opens on the dulcetly-hued, seven minute rendition of Joni Mitchell’s 1976 track Hejira and the gently rhythmical Goldbridge Road and then comes the emotive, impassioned balladry within The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, the sheer gossamer of the quietly galvanized How He Lost Her, before the sweeping, veritably shimmering Save Your Love for Me is brought forth.

Along next is one of my own personal favorites on this new album, the harmonica-driven, yearning solace within A Remark You Made, which is itself backed by the beautiful piano work and vocal harmonies of All The River, the angelically-imbibed spirit within Away with Words, the album rounding out on a quiet stunning rendition of Blind Faith’s/Steve Winwood’s 1969 musical treasure (which also features Greg Leisz on lap steel), Can’t Find My Way Home, closing on the stirring, heartfelt ache of Hilltop.

I don’t pretend to be able to write a whole album of good songs at a time, Christensen says. I’m really inspired by Bonnie Raitt, Joe Ely and others who’ve made their names picking great songs by friends and songwriters others might not know, as if they were saying, I’ve gotta let you in on this secret. And since I have a voice, I’m going to sing the good songs.

That voice earned her induction into the Iowa Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, as well as a long list of admiring peers and collaborators. Wherever your musical sky reaches, you’ll thank your lucky stars that Julia Christensen is there to sing for you.
