Title - Feel Alive
Artist - Sally Terrell

For those not in the know, Sally Terrell began a lifelong love affair with piano and singing at age six, poking out melodies alongside her father, a classically trained pianist and jazz aficionado who passed along his love of music while discovering his youngest daughter could play and sing by ear.

After building a career as a college writing teacher, Terrell began singing professionally when she and her husband formed the Green Jazz Band. Whether serenading audiences in English, French, or Portuguese, Terrell’s intuitive interpretations and razor-sharp ear showcase a gift for sharing the timeless stories of jazz.

In March of 2020, a week after the pandemic shut down the community college where Sally has taught writing, literature and communication for 32 years, the versatile singer - who released her indie album Just in Time in 2019 - began writing songs at the piano as a way to cope with the dizzying events of that tumultuous spring.

She quickly reached out to her musical director and arranger, John di Martino with just a few songs but a great vision - to create an album that could speak stark truth to our anxious collective moment, yet offer hope, affirm life and pointedly address just what it means to feel alive in this extraordinary time.

The result is Feel Alive (due to release April 22nd, 2022), a collective blend of five musically sparkling, lyrically hard-hitting and socially conscious originals with fresh, timely and artfully subtle twists on a half dozen standards also included.

Alternating her own compositions and the classics from track to track, the singer creates a fascinating musical conversation with an ensemble of excellent intuitive musicians brought together by di Martino.

Complementing di Martino on piano, organ and keyboards are multiple woodwind player Aaron Heick, trumpeter/flugelhornist Tim Oulmette, guitarist Wesley Amorim, bassist Lonnie Plaxico, drummer Vince Cherico and percussionist Samuel Tomes.

The album also features choral arrangements by Reginald Bowens on three tracks and an appearance by American jazz vocalist Giacomo Gates on Lights and Sirens.

1. Feel Alive
2. Blue Skies
3. Choose
4. Almost Like Being in Love

8. You Don’t Know Me

10. Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most
11. Feel Alive (Alt).
12. Some Other Time

This simply beautiful, free flowingly harmonious album opens on the joyfully euphoric title track Feel Alive and then her yearning rendition of Irving Berlin’s Blue Skies and then she backs those up seamlessly with the mid-tempo hipsway of Choose, the lushly orchestrated Almost Like Being in Love, the intriguing, eyes open Lights and Sirens (which features an appearance by Giacomo Gates), and then comes the delicate musings found within the piano balladry of When I Fall in Love (originally made famous by Doris Day in 1952).

Next up is the gently upbeat, yet impassioned, and aptly-named Beautiful and the achingly emotive love ode You Don’t Know Me, which are in turned followed by the gentle Latin pop hipsway flow of Out in the Blue, the delicate gossamer of Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most, the album rounding out an alternate Feel Alive, coming to a close on the tacitly-imbibed piano ballad Some Other Time.
