Title - Modern Age
Artist - Vanessa Peters

For those unaware, Texas-and-Italy-based singer-songwriter Vanessa Peters is set to release a new album, Modern Age, on April 23rd, 2021 via Idol Records.

The first single from the collection is the song Crazymaker, which premieres with Glide Magazine on February 24th and will be released on February 26th.

The second single, the title track, will follow with a release date on March 26th.

In late February 2020, Peters was in Italy, getting ready to go on a European tour with her band. She had just launched a Kickstarter to fund Modern Age (it was fully funded within three days), and recording sessions were scheduled for March.

So the band planned to head to Austin, Texas for SXSW and then to record the album with her friend and old tourmate, Grammy-award winning producer Joe Reyes, and engineer wunderkind Jim Vollentine.

But when Italy suddenly went into a national lockdown, Peters and her husband/bandmate, Rip Rowan, instead hatched a plan to work around the international travel restrictions.

Building on a series of demos recorded on the road in the Netherlands and Germany during their last tour, the band holed up in a farmhouse in Castiglion Fiorentino, the small town in Italy that Peters had once called home.

Over the course of 10 days, they worked to finish the songs they had begun the year prior and to tackle the batch of new songs that Peters had written in the meantime.

It was recorded kind of like Jackson Brownes Running on Empty, recalls Peters. We worked on the album in four different countries and in pop-up studios, in part while we were on tour.

1. Modern Age
2. Make Up My Mind
3. Crazymaker
4. Valley of Ashes
5. Hood Ornament
6. The Band Played On
7. Never Really Gone
8. The Weight of This
9. Yes
10. The Try
11. Still Got Time

From the opening power chords of the title track, Modern Age, it is obvious that the relationship between Peters and her band during lockdown has sparked a fresh, raucous energy to their collaborative state, for that is backed seamlessly by the indie alt-rock of Make Up My Mind, (a song about being written off as a chick singer), the brilliant, early 90s indie-imbued Crazymaker (which explores the sort of person who makes you feel that you are the crazy one), and then we get the low key, gentle funk guitar work of Valley of Ashes and the drum-led, palpitating key work beauty Hood Ornament.

The acoustic/electric guitar work of the mid-tempo Phair-esque The Band Played On is a euphoric masterpiece of the highest order and that is backed by the melodically foot-tapping Never Really Gone, the quieter fare of The Weight of This, Peters forth rightfulness of earnest angst within Yes then comes to the fore, with the album rounding out on the upbeat, folk-pop rock of The Try, closing on the joyous hand-clapper Still Got Time.

Produced and mixed by Rowan, with mastering by Dave McNair, Modern Age also boasts a band lineup featuring Peters (vocals, acoustic guitar), Rowan (drums, keyboards), Federico Ciancabilla (electric guitar), Matteo Patrone (keyboards), and Andrea Colicchia (bass guitar), with special guest Reyes providing rhythm guitar on the first single, Crazymaker.
