Title - 'Down Home Blues: Miami Atlanta & More' [3CD]
Artist - Various

For those not in the know, Wienerworld has just released their fifth box-set in their our unmissable Down Home Blues series, exploring the unique regions of the black American blues scene.

Down Home Blues: Miami Atlanta & The South Eastern States - Blues In The Alley features 29 artists spread over 3 discs that were influential in continuing and developing the traditions of the blues in the southeast.

Packaged in a deluxe digipak with outer slipcase, featuring 83 tracks, all of them superbly remastered, this collection has been collated thanks to the generous help of blues collectors from both sides of the Atlantic, with rare recordings that are for the first time made available for listening via today's compact disc medium.

An outstanding 78-page book, featuring a 15,000-word essay by blues historian Chris Bentley, accompanies the release and rare period photographs illustrate the essay throughout with a complete sessionography and extensive gallery of original 78 and 45 record labels.

From the very opening of the rack-mounted harmonica guitar-driven duo from Frank Edwards on 'Sweet Man Blues' and 'Three Woman Blues,' which are ably backed by the tuneful guitar work of Curley Weaver on tracks like 'Brown Skin Woman,' 'She Don’t Treat Me Good No More' and 'I Keep On Drinkin’,' on through to the early down home blues recordings from none other than Ray Charles (before his climb to fame with his bigger sounding jazz-tinged blues), Blues In The Alley is one of the most incredible collections of this musical genre that I have come across in a long, long time.

Furthermore, alongside these tracks are early recordings from Earl Hooker and Jerry McCain, two exceptionally gifted musicians who were always, and bewilderingly, left on the cusp of success.

Covering the length and breadth of the South Eastern region of America, such as states like Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio, Tennessee, New York, Kentucky, and North Carolina in the late '40s into the very early '60s, this wondrous 3CD box-set boasts so much rawly dated, at times crackly, music that just listening to it you could swear you're seeing it all unfold in black and white.

And considering the oh-so early dates of recording, let alone the bare boned, shoe string budgets many of smaller labels had to deal with in this period, it's absolutely amazing that the quality of the recordings are still as impressive today as I'm sure they were back then also.

Blues In The Alley is a close companion to Wienerworld's Tough Enough collection (WNRCD5104), with both sets dovetailing the post-war blues from America's north and southeastern states.

The southeastern states were known as slow starters in having record companies to start up to record, produce and distribute the artistes that were performing on their own doorsteps after the Second World War.
