Long Arm Of The Law: Part I & II [Special Edition]
(Lin Wei, Shum Wai, Wong Kin, Kong Lung, et al / 2-Disc Blu-ray / NR / 2023 / Arrow Films - MVD Visual)
Overview: Presented together in one dynamite package comes The Long Arm of the Law and The Long Arm of the Law Part 2. Directed by Johnny Mak (To be Number One) and his brother, Michael Mak (Sex and Zen, Butterfly and Sword) respectively, these two movies are packed full of Hong Kong-style action sequences, thrills, and spills, and provide an explosive prelude to what would eventually become a quadrilogy of martial arts thrillers.
Blu-ray Verdict: In LONG ARM OF THE LAW (1984), thugs sneak into Hong Kong to rob a jewellery store, then kill a cop during their getaway. They plan another heist while hiding from the police hunting them down to avenge the slain comrade.
Things start to go in the wrong direction for them even before they can cross the border, however and the gang makes a conscious effort to defeat the odds through camaraderie and loyalty. They loudly profess their love of freedom and one wonders if these are in fact hardened criminals or clueless country potatoes.
They definitely are clueless towards their impending downward spiral that continues with a double cross from a local mobster, while they have to wait for their targeted jewelry shop to re-open after someone else’s robbery.
This film has it all, gratuitous violence that was all but impossible for western cinema back then. Very funny and absurd tales of country boys vs the HK redlight district. Now historic Hong Kong footage from the walled city ghetto, where the gang takes refuge in an underground clinic and is drawn into a superbly staged final shootout.
Which all comes together to provide a classic tale of male and criminal self-destruction, told in an early super low-budget HK film from a bygone era.
In LONG ARM OF THE LAW 2 (1987), suspecting that a mastermind is behind a sudden crime wave, the Royal Hong Kong Police Force sends in three undercover agents to crack a violent crime ring.
The second of the four-part series, although each film tells a separate story. This one is about three cops from the mainland who illegally travel to Hong Kong and end up going undercover in the gang world.
