'Verotika' [Blu-ray + DVD + Soundtrack CD]
(Rachel Alig, Alice Haig, Scotch Hopkins, Natalia Borowsky, Sean Kanan, et al / Blu-ray + DVD + Soundtrack CD / NR / 2020 / Cleopatra Entertainment - MVD Visual)

Overview: Glenn Danzig's directorial debut, is a horror anthology that compiles stories from Danzig's line of comic books of the same name.

Stories which focus on horror content that's often sexual and violent in nature, usually featuring scantily-clad female protagonists.

Blu-ray Verdict: OK, and telling it like it is from the off, I personally watched this alone and all that kept running through my head was the phrase: It's so bad it's actually good!

Chock full of bad effects, bad editing, randomly bouncing along on a really bad script combined with some really, really bad acting, if it hadn't been this "good" I would have abandoned it a quarter of the way in, trust me!

I've since seen it with two friends and the common theme here between us is that 'Verotika' is, and without a shadow of a doubt, a self-important piece of visual art from Danzig, with no apparent awareness of its own absurdity!

Which is rather beautiful unto itself, of course. So yeah, I guess, technically, it's an anthology, but the individual stories are so disjointed that it doesn't seem like it matters. Even calling it an "anthology" feels like I'm giving the script too much credit!

Written and directed by rock / metal / punk music legend Glenn Danzig, founder of Misfits, Samhain and Danzig, and starring Alice Tate (The Kominsky Method), Sean Kanan (The Karate Kid Part III), Caroline Williams (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2) and Cody Renee Cameron (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie), they all get to play within the obvious small budget, but the fact their collective acting is entertainingly bad, somehow wooden and even overenthusiastic at the same time shows you the lack of guidelines given here by Danzig.

With large pockets of scenes featuring gore, and plenty of scantily clad young women (and no matter what they are doing, all with perfect hair!), there are just so many bewildering happy accidents that they will have you laughing out loud, trust me!

Moments where they didn't get the coverage they needed, but went with it regardless, leading to head scratching edits and bizarro continuity errors. Like zooms and shots that go on just a little too long and make you shout at the TV "Cut!"

And so, in closing, and playing Devil's Journalistic Advocate here, 'Verotika' is all that and more when it comes to how OTT bad it truly is, BUT all the things that make you laugh, that you find terrible, all the OTT acting and B-movie special effects that don't even come close to being imaginative MAKE 'Verotika' the cult movie success that it WILL undoubtly become down the years! This is a Widescreen Presentation (2.39:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Soundtrack CD:

1. 'Eyes Ripping Fire' (Danzig)
2. 'Dancing Madly Backwards on a Sea of Air' (Ministry)
