'I Am Vengeance' [Blu-ray+Digital]
(Stu Bennett, Anna Shaffer, Kevin Leslie, Mark Griffin, Bryan Larkin, Gary Daniels, Keith Allen, et al / Blu-ray+Digital / R / 2018 / Lionsgate Films)
Overview: When ex-soldier turned mercenary, John Gold, learns of the murder of his best friend, he sets off on a mission to find out what happened. What he discovers is a sinister conspiracy and he sets about taking down those responsible one by one.
Blu-ray Verdict: Personally, I enjoyed the heck out of this movie. Indeed, it reminded me of 'First Blood' with Sylvester Stallone in that it was raw, unapologetic and downright revengeful. If you're in the mood for a movie about a tough guy who wants to bring down scumbags, then this is your movie, trust me!
That said, and playing Devil's Advocate, as I must, regrettably, any humor to be derived from this flick has more to do with its obvious "B grade" credentials. Combined with the fact it tries far too hard to take itself seriously, the result is farcical affair with corny characterizations.
Again, a great watch for what it is, it could have done so much more with its deadpan, often monosyllabic dialogue, awkward action scenes and a starkly basic plot that's an unsophisticated retread of a retread, so to speak.
A one note tempo throughout, for me, the main, and most important character in this film wasn't the main star himself, but the woman in the driver seat! Yes, I'm talking about Sandra, who was funny, hip, beautiful, and just the support he needed (and for us to keep watching, of course).
In closing, I had heard of the lead actor from his WWE days as "Wade Barrett" and from another decent B movie action film 'Eliminators' (with fellow action star Scott Adkins), so I knew what to expect going in.
Delivering on some solid action with plenty of fights, shootouts, violent bad guy deaths (with one liners thrown in for good measure), a good body count from the former WWE star makes 'I Am Vengeance' a very decent night in, low/mid level action movie viewing portal.
