'The Hangover (Extreme Edition)'
(Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, et al / 2-Disc DVD / NR / 2010 / Warner Bros.)
Overview: Two days before his wedding, Doug (Justin Bartha) drives to Las Vegas with his best buddies Phil and Stu (Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms) and his future brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis), for a blow-out bachelor party they vow they'll never forget.
But when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning with pounding headaches, they can't remember a thing. Their luxury hotel suite is beyond trashed and the groom is nowhere to be found.
DVD Verdict: Hysterically funny comedies are trailblazers that redefine the genre and spawn a plethora of weak imitations. Comedic pioneers include Animal House and the forever-irreverent Caddyshack.
Now joining these illustrious ranks is 'THE HANGOVER,' a raunchy, ornery, in-your-face kneeslapper that blazes a new trail into the comedic badlands. Centered around a bachelor trip to Vegas gone awry, this movie is not only hysterical, it's well-crafted and delivered by an extraordinary ensemble of actors. There are no weak links here.
Timed for the Holidays, 'THE HANGOVER: Extreme Edition' contains an exclusive never-before-seen 28-page wedding album featuring missing photos from the ill-fated Vegas wedding and more incriminating photos from the lost camera that you couldn´t see in theaters! Additionally, the Extreme Edition boasts everything from the original 2-disc Special Edition, including a Map of Destruction - retracing the fate-filled evening, action and cursing mash-ups, extras from The Dan Band, Iron Mike and the three groomsmen, including a hilarious gag reel!
Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha all bring their own unique talents to their roles as four pals celebrating one last guys' night out before one of them (Bartha) gets hitched on Sunday. Of course, their first night on the town goes astray once their drinks are laced with Rohypnol; they all wake up on Saturday morn with no memory of what took place the night before, and worse still, they've lost the groom-to-be.
Their subsequent "quest" to find their pal drives the engine of this comedy, as their wacky adventures have them crossing paths with the likes of a delightfully insane Ken Jeong to Mike Tyson (playing himself).
The brilliance of the movie comes from the first scene of real trouble in their collective lives - when the guys wake up in a completely trashed hotel suite. But there are signs of a true blowout - broken tables, a burning sofa, a baby in the closet and a tiger in the bathroom. And a missing fiance!
The rest of the movie involves Stu, Phil and Alan trying to track down Doug in Vegas even though nobody can remember a single thing from the night before. The twists and turns involve Vegas crime lords and a sweet prostitute, played lovingly by Heather Graham.
'THE HANGOVER' then rushes to its whirlwind climax, culminating in the four friends finally taking a look at pics from a digital camera of their forgotten Friday night - a hysterically funny ending to an outrageous comedy gem.
