Title - Haydn Cello Concertos Vivaldi Concerto for Violin

For those not in the know, much like myself, Christoph Croisé is a French-German-Swiss cellist.

Winner of the Berliner International Music Competition, the Prix Jeune Soliste des Medias Francophones Publics, and the International Manhattan Music Competition, young cellist Christoph Croisé debuts on AVIE performing the two Cello Concertos by Franz Joseph Haydn.

His fresh and fervent approach is matched by his collaborators, the Eurasian Soloists Chamber Orchestra, as they recreate the original set up of the works first performances in the Esterhazy Castle when the composer directed from the harpsichord alongside the first violinist and the soloist.

The Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major, Hob. VIIb/1 was composed around 1761-65 for longtime friend Joseph Franz Weigl, then the principal cellist of Prince Nicolaus's Esterházy Orchestra.

The work was actually presumed lost until 1961, when musicologist Oldøich Pulkert discovered a copy of the score at the Prague National Museum.

Though some doubts have been raised about the authenticity of the work, most experts believe that Haydn did compose this concerto.

Concerto No. 2 in D Major for cello and orchestra, Hob. VIIb/2, Op. 101, was composed in 1783 for Antonín Kraft, a cellist of Prince Nikolaus's Esterházy Orchestra.

The piece's authenticity was doubted for some time, and at one stage it was suggested that Kraft himself had written it, but most experts now believe that the work is indeed authentic after Haydn's autograph score was discovered in 1951.

Although the concerto sounds more relaxed and lyrical than its C major predecessor it is more technically difficult for the soloist.

And that's where Croisé comes in for his dedication to the works is beyond discussion. He literally embodies the spirit of the original compositions and floats along with them as if magically harnessed.

Croisé concludes the album with Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Violin and Cello, RV 547, joined by the orchestra's founder and director, Kazakh violinist Sherniyaz Mussakhan.

A magical performance from beginning to end, Concerto In B Flat RV 547 is expertly executed and spaciously recorded by Croisé. Furthermore, and in my humble opinion, his work here consolidates and celebrates the original intent Vivaldi entertained when creating the work.
